Alen Air Breathesmart Review

What really works in Alen Air’s favor (and subsequently, every customer’s favor too) is their intelligent design concepts and engineering. Combined, this intelligence delivers clean air efficiently from attractive air purifiers that fit any style of decor.

The BreatheSmart is not some cheap filtration unit – it’s a machine that should serve you for years. Therefore, due diligence is suggested before making such a purchase.

Quality Costs More – But It Pays Off Too

Top quality air purifiers all have significant price tags attached. So it’s best to consider this kind of purchase as a long-term investment. By all accounts, the BreatheSmart is a solid and reliable machine that produces impressive results. It’s the kind of investment that pays over and over again.

The Alen BreatheSmart comes with an impressive warranty – as do all of their air purifier products. The warranty is good for a lifetime – as long as you are the original owner and you pay attention to maintaining the machine properly. Sounds pretty fair to me.

There’s no hidden fine print with impossible to meet conditions. Alen chose a more straightforward approach. Something completely different from the so-called, 25-year warranty provided on my recently purchased hardwood flooring.

That “warranty” basically said that if anyone walked on the floor in anything other than soft-soled slippers, the warranty was null and void. And if you had a pet in the house, don’t even waste your time trying to make a claim.

Alen has made a bold move by going against the tide. Imagine that – a company that’s willing to stand behind their products and guarantee that they function as they should. Pretty impressive in my book.

It’s what sets Alen apart and makes them a market leader. When you treat your machine with care and use it as directed, it should prove to be a huge benefit to you and all those who share your indoor space.

The Alen Corp. warranty works when the filters are used properly and replaced on schedule. Common sense type of stuff. You cannot disregard the unit and expect Alen to outright replace it when it stops working. Sounds logical, doesn’t it?

When You Need Something More

BreatheSmart is a larger capacity, more heavy duty purifier than the popular T 500 Tower. And it has a 35% larger capacity than the Fit50. It’s a sizable box that’s both well-designed and aesthetically pleasing. With 14 different color and wood-grain finish options, it can fit into most any office or home decor.

Customized design and functionality is another way Alen Air gains an edge over many competing brands. Not only can you choose the front cover of your BreatheSmart air purifier and determine its appearance, you can also – and more importantly – address the specific problems or symptoms you’re currently experiencing  with your indoor air.

Whatever air problem you would like to resolve, there’s probably a specific HEPA filter for that purpose – or at least one that will address the issue more effectively.

The Alen BreatheSmart is a large unit. Once you move up to a “serious” air purifier, you’re going to have to step up to a larger, heavier-duty machine. And that’s what you’re getting here.

It’s Not All Lollipops and Ice Cream

But with the larger size comes two not so pleasant effects: 1) a larger and louder motor and 2) a higher sticker price. That seems to be the way, no matter what brand you select. On the plus side, you’re investing in something that should serve you for years, if not decades.

The Alen BreatheSmart is a durable machine backed by the strongest warranty in the industry. It offers a higher capacity to process and purify the air inside your room.

This increased capability naturally requires a stronger motor. Thankfully, the noise produced by the motor and fan only seems to be an issue at higher speeds.

You probably wouldn’t want to run it at turbo speed (the highest setting) when you’re trying to focus on your work or get to sleep. It’s best to crank the BreatheSmart up when you’re not in the room so the noise is a non-issue.

Options Add Flexibility

As is the case with every Alen air purifier, there are four filter options that you can choose from in addition to the standard (HEPA-Pure) filter provided with the unit.

Those four options are:

  • HEPA – Pure (dust, allergens)
  • Silver (bacteria, germs)
  • OdorCell (smoke, heavy odors)
  • FreshPlus (chemicals and VOCs)

Alen claims that the BreatheSmart efficiently purifies the air in large rooms and open spaces up to 1100 ft.² . They also state that this device produces fresh, clean air throughout in as little as two hours. This does require the machine to run on “turbo” – the highest setting.

The Fit50 offers a similar design style and functionality to the BreatheSmart, but according to the manufacturer, it’s made for rooms of up to 800 ft.².

Better Safe Than Sorry

Some buyers may achieve similar results. But for a more accurate projection, I like to revise those numbers downward. Being more conservative in my estimates has proven helpful in avoiding disappointing products.

Your results may vary. That’s something you should always keep in mind with any product. Your results also depend on the condition of the indoor air your particular symptoms and the severity of such.

In some environments, the air is quite good as it is. In those cases, I would probably opt for a smaller machine like the T500, instead of going for the pricier BreatheSmart.

As a rule of thumb, if you reduce the claimed size by 1/3 to 1/2, you’re most likely going to experience a positive outcome with any quality air purifier. Therefore, a room size of  approximately 550 ft.² up to 800 ft.² should be very well-served by the BreatheSmart.

That’s not to say that you won’t be thrilled with the performance of this machine in a1100 or 1200 square-foot room. It could happen. And if that’s the case – fantastic – I’m thrilled for you!

I simply prefer caution instead of optimism when forking over several hundred dollars of your hard-earned cash. Just to be absolutely clear, the odds of this machine (or likely most, for that matter) producing great results increases when the room is somewhat smaller than the manufacturer’s suggested capacity.

Most buyers seem fully satisfied with their BreatheSmart purifiers. But I can’t help but think there would be even more people experiencing wonderful results if they weren’t pushing the machine to its manufacturer stated limits.

I’m not picking on Alen – it’s a widespread practice in many industries. But it wouldn’t be fair to anyone reading this review if I failed to mention it.

Automatic Air Purification

One of the things users like most about the BreatheSmart is the “Auto” mode setting. It’s a popular feature and with good reason. You can get your indoor air purified without having to think about it  and without having to adjust any settings manually.

Just plug the machine in and set it on automatic. The BreatheSmart has an intelligent built-in sensor that adjusts to the ever-changing air quality conditions. The automatic setting makes life easier. It also reduces unnecessary power consumption and wear and tear on both the filter and motor.

The only potential downside is when the machine unexpectedly kicks into Turbo speed. The sudden shift in gears can be an interruption. If you’re intensely focused on a task, or you’re sleeping, any interruption is less than welcome. On the other hand, if you’re sleeping on the job, “Auto” mode might be a lifesaver for a different reason.

“Quiet” Comes With A Cost

Lower settings on the BreatheSmart are much quieter.

But it’s important to understand that slower speeds mean filtering at a reduced rate. Therefore, it’s not necessarily quite as effective in larger spaces as suggested by the manufacturer.

Alen Breathesmart helps children breathe easier

The built-in “lights off” mode proves that the Alen Corporation listens to its customers. Many buyers need purifiers at night to help themselves or their children sleep better. But blaring lights can make this less than ideal sleeping conditions.

Alen listened and implemented. At a seemingly insignificant cost, they’ve made a lot of people happy.

Wouldn’t the world be a much better place if every manufacturer listened to and adapted their products to please more of those who buy?

Another helpful feature built into the BreatheSmart should be of particular interest for those with young kids around. Alen has thoughtfully added a locking control panel and the child-safe fan guard. Both are useful even for locations like offices and waiting rooms where young visitors are typically only present for short periods of time.

 Built-In Functionality

Alen BreatheSmart Air Purifier Functions Include:
Built-in Handles for easier moving around
4-Speed Motor and Fan Unit
Smart Sensor for automatic adjustments
Power/Sleep mode
Air Quality Light Indicator
Filter Change Light
On-Off Switch for Ionizer
Built-in Timer for automatic shut off

Alen BreatheSmart CADR and More

CADR: 300 (result of Energy Star testing)
Rate of Filtration: 99% of particles larger than .3 micron
CFM (measurement of airflow in Cubic Feet per Minute):

Turbo Speed: 285
THIRD: 225
FIRST: 150

The CADR rating favors machines that circulate more air. It’s a statistic that doesn’t heavily favor a brand like Alen. The Breathesmart does an admirable job of capturing and containing air pollutants. But it’s rate of circulation is lower than others.

 What Matters Most?

Since the primary purpose of any air purifier is to remove as many of the harmful irritants in the air as possible, it scores high marks. The problem is that a strong system of filtering often slows airflow.

The Breathesmart filters air better than it circulates it. Therefore, it scores lower on the CADR scale.

Any purifier that outputs more air automatically scores higher – irrespective of the machine’s true effectiveness in purifying the air. That’s why you should not place too much emphasis on any device’s CADR score. It’s one factor. But there are other things that matter more when it comes to generating cleaner indoor air.

Noise Levels (in Decibels) Generated by the Alen BreatheSmart
Turbo Speed: 56 dB

Alen Breathesmart Delivery

Your BreatheSmart arrives at your door expertly packaged and in perfect condition – just the way it should.

If every product was packaged with this kind of care, there’s would be  fewer complaints and happier buyers everywhere.

Changing Filters on the Alen BreatheSmart

It’s quick and easy to change the HEPA filters. The device itself will tell you when that time has arrived. Just be sure to listen, rather than ignore. Any quality air purifier is only as good as the filter that’s installed. If it has past its prime, a change will only improve performance and results.

Here’s how to change the filter, step by step:

1: Remove the front cover of your BreatheSmart.
2: Lift out the old filter and immediately place it a garbage bag that’s open on the floor. Notice how dirty it is. Look at the difference in appearance and weight between the used filter and the new.
3: Insert the new replacement filter.
4: Close the front panel and choose the speed setting you desire.

Your Symptoms Relieved

The BreatheSmart helps with multiple symptoms, making breathing easier for pretty much everyone.

Asthma sufferers reported easier breathing and less reliance on puffers and inhalers. For some, it appears to have eliminated or reduced the need for decongestants and allergy meds.

It has helped others get relief from bronchitis and other respiratory ailments.  It helps alleviate stuffiness, sneezing, coughing and that miserable feeling that goes with it.

Alen’s BreatheSmart air purifier is effective at removing the pungent smell of mildew in the air. But it’s important to note that mildew will often persist (with any system) if the cause is not properly addressed.

For example, there could be a mold problem and if you don’t fix the problem, cleaning the air is only a partial solution. In this case, it’s a band-aid measure that covers the problem – but doesn’t correct it.

This powerful device is also known to remove pet odors, smoke, dust mites, bacteria, pet hair and dander, fine dust, pollen and cooking odors too. All in all, it’s a dependable performer that’s certain to improve the air quality wherever you put it  to use.

Alen BreatheSmart vs Blueair

The Blueair equivalent is approximately 50% more powerful, for a price that’s about 10 to 20% higher. It’s also noticeably noisier and larger. And aesthetically, you can’t beat the BreatheSmart.

Frankly, it’s a better-looking unit than the Blueair 603. For some that won’t matter – for others, it’s a huge factor.

Performance is basically the same – no matter which way you go. Both of these units are heavy duty purifiers and both will do an excellent job of cleaning your inside air.

Alan Air Purifier Ozone

Pretty much every electrical appliance on the planet emits some ozone. But it’s likely that your microwave and TV emit more ozone than the BreatheSmart does.

Ozone emissions should not be a concern here. Any ozone generated would be of a negligible amount at most. This unit is completely safe. It’s been tested and approved for use in California, which has some of the strictest air quality controls anywhere.

What People Love About the Alen BreatheSmart Air Purifier

Below is a list of some of the advantages people have cited about the Breathesmart:

The washable pre-filter is a huge plus. It captures large amounts of dust and hair. While the standard HEPA filter handles pollen and fine dust.

The entire unit is light enough to be moved to different areas or rooms. The built-in handles make it easy to change locations.

With the BreatheSmart, you can set it and forget it. It clears the air well on auto and tells you when the filter needs changing. No thinking or extra attention required.

Assisted Filtration

The built-in Ionizer helps charge particles, enhancing filtration. This makes them stick better similar to the filter. It’s like dust sticking to a TV screen. Also, the fact that the Ionizer can be switched off is an added plus.

The Alen BreatheSmart is the ideal air purifier for shared workspace. It’s easy to set up and use and it generates cool air throughout the office. The lower sounds emitted are reported as being ‘pleasant’ by some. It produces a “white noise” that is not distracting at all in workplaces.

Another advantage of Alen air purifiers is you don’t have to remember to shut them off when you’re leaving the office. You can simply set the timer to handle this for you. The auto function works well and it’s overall, these machines are quieter than most competing units.

Maintenance: How To Keep Your BreatheSmart Performing Well For Years

Lightly vacuum the pre-filter frequently, as soon as particles become noticeable. Wash it and set it aside to dry completely before reinstalling. Do not wash the HEPA filter. Instead, change it as soon as necessary. Also, it’s recommended that you clean the sensor with each filter replacement.

What Some People Dislike About The Alen BreatheSmart

A complaint we often hear is that with the BreatheSmart, replacement filters are pricey – up $109 each. While that may seem expensive, these are cheaper replacements than the ones other machines require.

It’s worth noting that the complaint about the price of replacement filters is universal. It happens with every brand and virtually every model. And not just on air filters – but water filters too.

Sure it would be nice if the entire filter system lasted as long as the purifier itself. But that’s wishful thinking.

It’s like hoping car manufacturers would supply vehicle tires that lasted a lifetime – and you know that’s never going to happen – even though the capability exists.

Keeping It Real

Understand that you’re going to need one to two filter replacements every year and factor this into your budget. There’s no way to avoid it and still enjoy the benefit of cleaner, healthier air.

With walls and stairs acting as dividers, this machine is not as effective in a 1200 square-foot home as it would be in a 1200 square-foot open room. Common sense, right? Well apparently, common sense isn’t all that common.

In the case of a floor being divided up into rooms, it’s best to move the filter around from room to room or to get multiple devices, such as the T500. It all depends on the layout of your workspace or living space.

Another complaint is that there’s only one filter that can be used at any one time. The unit comes with a HEPA filter and a pre-filter. But for specialty applications like heavy odors or smoke, you’ll need to replace the standard filter and the filter designed for your specific needs.

It’s All Relative

Another slight annoyance is that it’s rather noisy. But noise is relative to what you’re used to. For example, if you’re used to city living, the fan in the BreatheSmart might not be bothersome at all – even on Turbo Speed.

On the other hand, if you live in the country where you sleep in complete darkness and true silence, the fan noise from any kind of purifier can be enough to bother you.

Another apparent disadvantage is that these units are manufactured in China. While Alen Air is based in Austin, Texas and all products are shipped from the United States, they still have the stigma of being “made in China”.

The World’s Supplier

What we all need to get used to is that pretty much everything is made outside of the United States now. Surprisingly, many top quality products are coming out of China these days.

MADE IN CHINAOh, there’s still lots of low-cost junk items and knock-offs made there and that will probably remain. But I was somewhat surprised recently to find the high-end stereo equipment I was considering was also made in China.

It’s a fact of life. Get over it. I suggest examining the product in detail instead of making a broad assumption.

These are large units that occupy considerable space. Some people have reported being surprised at how big these units actually are. Consider it almost to be the size of a small end table. That’s the amount of floor space that’s going to be required. Build this into your floor plans to avoid disappointment or surprise later.

These units are made mostly out of plastics and plastics are not very good for the environment. Some plastics emit gasses into the air. Although I suspect that emissions from Alen’s products would be minimal simply because they come from a line of products offered by a team who genuinely cares about their customer’s experience.

The Verdict: Alen BreatheSmart is a Winner

If your conditions and symptoms are improved by breathing cleaner, fresher air – you should get a BreatheSmart. Open it up, plug it in and let it rip.

Come back a couple of hours later and check out the condition of your room’s air. If air quality and purity make little difference to you, why spend the money?

Truth be told, there’s no downside to having cleaner air to breathe. We need safer, fresher air flowing wherever we spend our time. All things considered, BreatheSmart is a well-rounded choice.

The filters are not cheap – they never are. But with any quality air purifier, you must also have a quality filter.

These are high-performance machines for the serious seeker of cleaner, fresher air. They work well with the standard filter supplied. They might work even better for you with the right kind of specialty filter.

There are no side effects to using a well-made air purifier. It doesn’t just treat the symptoms, it goes after the problem in many cases such as dust, pollen, and other airborne pollutants.

There’s no expense more worthwhile than one that provides you with a healthier environment.
