7 Iron-Clad Reasons In Favor Of Treadmill Desks For The Office

It’s no secret that sitting at a desk endlessly is not particularly good for anyone’s health or well-being. The human body wasn’t designed for the sedentary lifestyle many people have grown accustomed to with their office jobs. But treadmill desks can change everything.

sitting down all day isn't healthyRemaining seated all day is unhealthy. It also contributes to the obesity epidemic and weakens the body’s natural ability to fight off disease.

People tend to grow tired and lethargic from remaining seated for long stretches of time.

Studies indicate that it is also less productive to sit at a desk all day than when sitting is combined with intermittent standing or walking sessions.

Taking Care of People

As a business, you can have cutting-edge products, a global presence, and state-of-the-art facilities. But what you should never overlook is the real asset value of your employees. People are the heart and soul of every successful enterprise – large and small. When you provide your people with the best possible tools and office environment – you tend to get the best out of them.

It’s important to not only perform effectively day-after-day but to do so in a way that adds to their lives instead of taking anything away. Treadmill desks can go a long way towards improving the health and job performance of anyone who uses them consistently. They can be a critical component of an outstanding wellness program for your organization.

loyal hard-working employeesYour Greatest Asset

Let’s face it, loyal, hard-working employees are the greatest asset any business can have. Without quality people, what have you got? But are we as business owners and executives doing all we can to protect and nurture our human resources?

Treadmill desks are an easy way to encourage employees to get more physically active during the day. It’s a perk that pays off in spades.

Following are the top 7 reasons why your company should at least consider providing treadmill desks for your employees:

1. You’re going to be providing standard desks and/or workstations anyway. So why not provide something that costs about the same (or even less) yet provides value in multiple ways? Yes, there are two components – desks and treadmills required. But compared to all the things required for a typical workstation, cubicle, or private office – there’s little difference in cost.

2. Standing is healthier than sitting. Walking (even slowly) it’s healthier than standing alone. A typical day will probably include all three – sitting, standing, and walking. Providing the equipment  encourages greater engagement. This ultimately leads to fewer sick days, a happier workforce, and lower health insurance costs.

3.  After a brief period of adjustment, most people find it just as easy to perform many routine office tasks while standing or walking at a desk as it is while sitting. The key with a treadmill desk is to walk slow – up to about 2 miles per hour. At higher speeds, it becomes increasingly difficult to manage certain tasks like answering emails. But reading alone is actually easy at 3 to 3.5 miles per hour.

4.  While most “multitasking” is disruptive and unproductive, walking while you work actually enhances one’s productivity. The activity of movement increases your level of alertness and focus.

It’s second nature for most of us to walk without paying conscious attention to the physical activity. Yet it’s this very kind of movement that energizes and uplifts one’s state of being, making you more attentive and focused on the work-related tasks in front of you.

end-of-day-exhaustion5. Most people today lead moderately to extremely busy lives. So it’s often difficult to find time for any extra time for exercise.

Being able to walk on the job helps everyone add movement and exercise to their daily routine. With a treadmill desk at work, you won’t have to worry about trying to squeeze in 30 minutes of exercise into an already overloaded schedule.

As important as exercise is to a healthier lifestyle, it’s a lot easier when you don’t have to think about it or plan on a trip to the gym. The fact that you can accomplish other things at the same time is a bonus.

6. Walking is an easy way to improve one’s mood. Better moods lead to an improved overall atmosphere in the office and performance levels increase too. All forms of exercise – including walking – stimulates the release of dopamine in the brain. It’s this feel-good chemical that boosts one’s level of happiness and satisfaction.

Being able to trigger this helpful attitude booster is particularly useful for anyone who deals directly with clients such as sales reps, project managers, and customer service personnel.

7. Walking is the most effortless and natural form of human exercise. It helps the body function more effectively in multiple ways. It improves circulation, gets more blood going to the brain, stimulates the lymphatic system, and strengthens the immune system. The spinoff effect is that walking can help ward off serious illnesses, ease back pain, improve sleep patterns and more.

Healthier, happier employees tend to perform at a higher level on the job. So, anything that enhances the physical health and emotional well-being of the individuals on your team – benefits the entire organization.

That’s what treadmill desks can do. They get people moving. And the result is a healthier workforce, accelerated energy levels, intensified focus, and elevated spirits. All this can only improve your bottom line.

Trekdesk Treadmill Desk Review

Looking to get out of that office chair and onto a treadmill while you work? Well, the Trekdesk treadmill desk might be just the thing you’re searching for.

In a hurry? Click here now for a great deal on Trekdesk on Amazon

If you don’t already own a treadmill, you’ll want to get one now. The Trekdesk is sold separately but when combined with a treadmill – it can be transformational. But you could also use this one as a fully-functional standing desk since the Trek Desk provides all you need to take care of business.

Accommodates All Desktop Components

With a spacious work surface that measures 34 inches deep (at its widest) by 72 inches in length, you’ll have enough room for multiple monitors, keyboard, mouse, tablet, notepads – and more.

The Trekdesk is a rather large piece of furniture. Combined with a treadmill, it occupies considerable space. So you’ll need to take this into account before making your purchase. If you’ve got the space – go for it. You’ll begin reaping the rewards even before you get used to your new standing desk.

Trekdesk Dimensions

Essentially, the Trekdesk sits over and wraps around the treadmill. Treadmills are usually fairly large pieces of equipment. Add in a stand-up desk the size of this one and you’re going to need floor space that’s at least 6.5 feet wide by about 6.5 feet deep – depending on the actual model of treadmill.

What’s great about the Trekdesk is that it can work seamlessly with virtually any brand and model of treadmill.

Comes With Helpful Add-Ons

Built-in features include two coffee cup holders, headset stand, three-level file stand, and a manuscript holder to hold documents upright. Each accessory makes it a little more convenient and easier to do what needs to be done on the job.

The manufacturer suggests a weight capacity of up to 55 pounds. But some users report almost doubling that figure, without having an issue. Of course, we recommend playing it safe and sticking within the suggested limits. After all, you’d hate to push your work surface to the breaking point and then have to go without it altogether. Why take that chance?

User-Friendly Design

With the center cut-out, you’re easily close enough to access the control panel of your treadmill. But what’s particularly helpful is that everything on your work surface is readily accessible too. You’ll have more than enough space to work and can even spread out from there.

Whatever tools or equipment you would use in your typical workday can probably fit on the Trek Desk without any problems . It’s ideal for people who need at least one monitor (and possibly several), keyboard, mouse, iPad, file folders, etc. You’ll still have plenty of room for notes.

Compact To Transport

Despite the large size of a fully-assembled Trekdesk, it’s also relatively compact for packaging purposes, making it much more economical to ship than you might think. Once this foldable desk is assembled properly, it’s quite sturdy and stable.

It’s the height adjustable legs that are the key to establishing an ergonomically correct workstation. Knobs located on the outside of each leg allow for a wide range of height adjustments. The height adjustment holes are numbered to make it a little bit easier to align equally on both sides.

Ideal Height Range

The Trekdesk is best suited to those people who are between 5’4″ to 6’4″ tall. But that doesn’t mean that others cannot use the desk effectively. It simply means that you may have to make some additional modifications if you’re outside of that height range.

Raising the treadmill by putting it on a platform would serve those who are shorter. Adding a platform to the uprights of the Trekdesk would make it more suitable for those who are taller.

Built To Last

With a powder-coated steel frame and height adjustable legs, the Trekdesk is built to last. You can set the height to whatever is most comfortable for you. Set it and forget it.

But if the same desk is to be used by several people of varying sizes on a regular basis, making those adjustments every time could be a bit of a pain. It’s a little inconvenient to adjust the height frequently because it’s a matter of aligning holes on both legs to either raise or lower the work surface.

Sitting All Day Can’t Be Good For You

Studies show that remaining in a seated position all day long takes it’s toll on the body. The more you can stand up – or better yet – walk around on the job, the better it is for your health.

Trekdesk Treadmill Desk Gets You Up and Moving

That’s why the Trekdesk is such a valuable piece of equipment for anyone with adequate space to work at a treadmill desk.

It allows you to combine work with healthy movement, which increases blood circulation. The bottom line is that the Trekdesk helps to make you healthier, more alert, and more productive at the same time.

Your Trekdesk Treadmill Desk Shipment

You can have your Trek Desk arrive at your door anywhere in the continental USA. It’s shipped in a large, 36” x 36” x 14” box that weighs about 80 pounds. If you live outside of the continental US, you may need to engage the services of a freight forwarding company to get your package delivered.

It’s a little inconvenient to adjust on your own because it’s a matter of aligning holes to either raise or lower the work surface. This is easier with two people since the height adjustments are on both sides of the desk. When you can flip the desk upside down so the tabletop is on the floor, it’s easier still because you can actually see what you’re doing.

Ergonomics Are Important

Set it up to the height that appears to be the most appropriate height for you. Ideally, your keyboard should be at elbow height. Your arms should just rest comfortably on the work surface when bent at the elbow ninety degrees. That’s likely the right height for you.

But you’ll need to test this out for yourself. Try this height and then adjust up or down slightly until it’s at the perfect setting.

Working in a standing position with good posture allows you to function in a more ergonomically correct way. It just feels better than sitting in at any kind of a desk. And the more you do it, the better it seems to be for you.

Walking is the most natural form of exercise you can get. Your back is naturally straighter when you walk properly, as opposed to sitting endlessly in an office chair.

Take It Easy At First

It’s best to ease into using the Trekdesk. Don’t go all-out and try to walk for 8 hours on your first day. Instead, work in small increments of say, 30 minutes at a time. After 30 minutes – switch it up.

Stop the treadmill and try working from a standing position at your Trekdesk. Of course, you can always switch to a regular desk and sit down anytime you want. And when you first start using a treadmill desk, that will probably occur fairly often.

Practice leads to improvement. The more you can get up and actually walk at a slow pace and work at the same time, the longer you’ll be able to go between intervals. Try it and you’ll see.

A Slow Pace Is All You Need

Go Slow

Most people find that walking at a slow pace of between 1 to 2 mph is ideal for being able to work at the same time.

At this speed, you can answer the telephone, participate in conference calls, respond to emails, write with your keyboard, or perform any of the typical office related activities.

This is something you can learn to do this quite easily. However, when you just start out, there’s a bit of an adjustment to be made. Once you get used to it, you’ll be astounded what you’re able to accomplish. Once you get used to it, you’ll be astounded what you’re able to accomplish.

TrekDesk Height Dimensions

Variable height adjustments are one of those things that make the Trekdesk a winner. From floor to desktop ranges anywhere from 46 1/2 inches on the low-end to 56 1/2 inches at maximum height.

What’s the Right Treadmill For Trekdesk?

Since almost any treadmill will do, you should have no problem finding one that merges perfectly. With 48 inches of clearance between the two uprights, and a design that fits on top of the arms, most standard treadmills will fit easily. This includes the ProForm 505 CST Treadmill and the Nordic Track Treadmill and many more brands.

The Trek Desk is sold separately. So you may have to add a new treadmill to your purchasing plans as well. The manufacturer shows the desk set up with a treadmill so people can easily visualize how the combination of desk and treadmill would look when set up in their home or office. But some have mistaken this to mean that a treadmill is included when clearly, it is NOT.

Higher Speeds Are Possible

Some people claim that they can work up to about 3 mph and get good work done at the same time. This is admirable. But it may be unlikely for you. It really depends on the nature of your work and your ability to get things done while moving on a treadmill.

When using a keyboard, for example, I find that 2 mph is about the absolute maximum I can reach. But your results may vary. Others can move at a faster clip without sacrificing the quality of their work. If you can too – more power to you! Just don’t count on it happening by default.

It’s recommended that you walk and you do so at a slow pace. Some like to throw in the occasional jog on the treadmill. But for bearing down and getting real work accomplished, we recommend a slow, easy pace.

What’s Unique About The Trek Desk?

The cutout in the center is brilliant in that it provides access to all points of the desktop. You are never too far away from the control panel or anything on your work surface.

It’s clear that the Trekdesk was developed through hands-on experience and feedback. With a spacious work area, you have plenty of room to spread out while you still have everything you need at your fingertips.

What this device does is it gets you out of your seat. And this can only benefit you in the long run. Others have suggested that it can help lower blood pressure and prevent varicose veins and blood clots from developing.

What To Do Before Starting Assembly

First things first – you need to make sure you have the right tools for the job. Primarily, this includes an electric drill. It can be corded or cordless – it doesn’t really matter. You also need a Phillips driver bit and a small drill bit to use for your pilot holes (1/16” is fine).

Before you start putting anything together, it’s always a good idea to layout all the parts and pieces. Separate them into different piles and bag the hardware pieces as separate groups.

Organization Matters

This makes it a whole lot easier to find the pieces and hardware to complete each stage of the assembly. Having all the parts around you in organized groups simplifies the job while making it much less stressful. Spending this crucial time up from can make all the difference in the world.

It’s an idea that doesn’t just apply to the Trekdesk. The same goes for anything that needs to be put together from a bunch of individual pieces. Sort it out first. It’s time well spent because you won’t have to handle each piece multiple times as you search for the right component.

Picture The End Result

It’s also helpful to have an image of the finished assembly. You wouldn’t attempt to put together a jigsaw puzzle without a clear image of the completed work. That just wouldn’t make much sense.

It’s the same thing when assembling furniture. Take a good look at how your product should appear once complete and lock this image into your mind.

PuttingThe Pieces TogetherPutting The Pieces Together

To minimize any frustration that normally goes with the territory when assembling knock-down furniture, it’s best to give yourself every advantage possible.

What you want to do is find a flat, level surface. Hopefully, that’s where you’re going to set up shop with your new treadmill desk.

It’s important to have enough space so that you’re not cramped. Trying to work in a confined space is difficult at best. A large, open area is best makes it much easier.

Help Wanted

It’s best to have a helper when it’s time to assemble. It’s much easier to do with two people. But if you’re short a pair of hands, don’t despair. You can do it on your own. It will just take longer to complete.

Even more important than having a helper is having the right tools for the job. Start with the essential ones like an electric drill, extension cord, pilot bit, and Phillips driver bit.

These are important tools due to the number of screws that need to be installed where no pre-drilled holes exist. You’ll be driving these screws into hard, thick plastic – that’s why a driver and pilot bit are recommended.

Overall, it’s relatively easy to put together the Trekdesk. Follow the diagrams that are included along with the written instructions. You don’t need any special handyman skills – although it is helpful – just as it would be with assembling any large item.

Folding Instructions

The desk is foldable, much like a folding table. That’s what makes it easy to move.Clear off the top of your desk and slide it away from the treadmill. Flip it over to remove the support struts (built-in slots under the desk are designed to hold these). Fold the legs down on top of one another and you’re done.

Folding up the Trekdesk makes it much easier to transport and tuck away in a storage closet or under a bed.

What Users Love About the Trekdesk

The Trekdesk benefits from a smart design that provides users with a large, fully-functional, “wraparound” work surface so that everything is at your fingertips.

Optional accessory locations provide flexibility so you’re not stuck with a set layout. It’s the perfect accompaniment to virtually any treadmill right out of the box, without requiring modifications.

Intelligent engineering and sturdy construction provide more than adequate overall stability that should hold up well for years. The hard plastic work surface is durable and offers a solid platform to work on. It’s also surprisingly easy to clean.

Spacious Work Area

With a generous work area, there’s plenty of space to spread out and handle any kind of work you would normally only perform while seated at a standard desk. The wide range of adjustability means it can work for any adult that’s of “average” size.

When set up to be used with a treadmill, the Trekdesk seems huge. I guess that’s because the work surface is almost 3 feet by 6 feet, which is larger than most desks. But it’s also higher than other desks. So that also contributes to the size impression.

Pack It Up

When you need space for other things, it’s easy to fold up the lightweight Trekdesk. You can then reassemble it elsewhere, or put away in storage until you’re ready to use it again.

It’s a rare, full-size, adjustable height standing desk built specifically for use with a treadmill. What makes it particularly unique is that it offers both quality and economy.

Trekdesk Dislikes

For some people, the Trekdesk seems a little pricey. But the same could be said about virtually any product. It actually costs less than most standard workstations or desks – and those ones provide no health benefit whatsoever.

Furniture purchases should be looked at as a long-term investment. If you get 5 solid years of service from your investment, the cost per year is just 20% of the total price. Get 10 years out of it and your annual cost is just 10%.

It’s healthy to be on your feet. So if you can walk as you work, you should jump at the chance. Can you really put a price on your health and emotional wellbeing?

Email Support

No company phone contact number is supplied. All you get is an email address. For some, this is an inconvenience. But for those of us who detest waiting on hold, or going the motions of following corporate phone directory hell – it’s a blessing in disguise.

Email allows you to avoid all that. But it’s only effective when you hear back in a timely manner and by all accounts, the customer service provided by Trekdesk is top drawer.

Pre-Drilling Missed

There are no predrilled holes. If these were provided, the product would surely cost a lot more than in does. For some, it may be a little difficult to fit the various pieces together perfectly.

If you are unfamiliar with assembling furniture, this could be a problem. And while an instruction manual is provided with both diagrams and written instructions, it’s still just a manual. So it may not be up to par (no shocker there) although it has improved over time. There is a video available too. But your best but might be to seek the assistance of a handyman friend or neighbor.

Handyman Installation Tip

Whatever you do, take the time to align the pieces in the correct position and hold them firmly in place. Pre-drill using a small pilot bit. Offset the pilot hole slightly so that once the screw enters it will naturally pull the two pieces tight together. Then drive those screws home firmly with a drill.

Some have complained that the Trekdesk takes up a lot of space. Unfortunately, there’s no way around that. If you don’t have the room – this isn’t going to work for you. Perhaps the company will make a smaller model for tighter spaces at some point. But for now, the full-size model is the only option.

Get Used To It

Using a treadmill desk as intended takes some getting used to. At first, it will probably feel a little awkward. But soon enough, it becomes second nature. In fact, you’ll get so used to it and the benefits it delivers that going back to the sitting desk all day might prove difficult. You’ll naturally want to get up and move.

Who Is The Trekdesk Best For?

This is an ideal solution for busy people who don’t have a lot of time for exercise. Although it’s essentially a piece of furniture, when used in conjunction with a treadmill, the Trek Desk provides an excellent opportunity to get you moving.

It isn’t a complete replacement for exercise, but it sure helps. It’s not the same as working out at the gym. But it does get you off the couch – and that’s good for everyone.

Hidden Benefit

If there’s a hidden benefit here, it’s that it won’t feel like you’re actually doing two things at once. You’ll be productively multitasking because you’ll be focused on your work.

The walking part will come automatically, without diverting your attention away. It’s like background music. You know it’s there, but it’s not a distraction.

Verdict: The Trekdesk Is A Fantastic Piece of Equipment To Own

The Trekdesk used with a treadmill contributes to better physical and emotional health. According to the experts, sitting down all day can be dangerous to your health. It can help you get rid of multiple aches and pains that are caused – or amplified – by sitting too long. It will improve your focus and your attitude. It’s a great mood lifter, particularly when you’re having a tough day.

Walking is said to help lower blood pressure and relieve stress naturally. It can mean fewer knots in your back and shoulders and looser muscles. It can help ease lower back pain triggered by sitting in an office chair all day long over a number of years. You’ll tend to experience greater flexibility and less pain as you walk through your work.

Energy, Focus, and Productivity

One thing you’re sure to notice is that you have sustained energy, focus, and productivity over longer periods. They’ll be no more mid-morning letdowns. And no afternoon crashes either.

It’s not as though you’re working out, yet it does get the blood flowing. You’ll breathe deeper and take in more fresh air. Even this small amount of movement is enough to stimulate the mind and body. You’ll feel more alert and more in tune with what you’re doing. As a result, you’ll naturally become more productive on the job.

Walking at a comfortable pace tends to give you more energy than it requires from you. A slow walk does not require a treadmill with a long track. Since your stride is more compact, practically any treadmill will serve the purpose. You can always step up to a better treadmill later.

5 Common Threats To Indoor Air Quality and What You Can Do

Are you aware of the potential dangers lurking in the air you’re breathing? Common threats to your indoor air quality are not always obvious. Your best bet is to remain alert to potential problems and then take whatever actions you can to circumvent the problem.

Outside air naturally makes its way inside. When that happens, it brings with it vehicle exhaust, industrial waste, pesticides, and other airborne contaminants. These irritants have no trouble making their way inside any home or place of business.

Some areas are worse than others. But any amount of indoor air pollution can cause serious health issues.

Multiple Sources of Contaminants

But that’s not the only concern with indoor air.

Numerous factors can affect your air quality. Some are obvious like smoking indoors. But it’s not just the smoke itself that’s bad for everyone. When a smoker enters the building, they also bring with them all the smoking-related chemicals that stuck to their clothing.

Other contributing sources of indoor air problems include building supplies, product finishes, furniture, and accessories. Carpeting and area rugs play a huge role too.

Many of these other sources of pollution often go undetected or ignored because they are simply part of the building or contents people are using. We tend to accept these things as part of life – without any critical analysis.

Building Materials

Materials used in home and office construction and renovations can be harmful to your indoor air.

Dust is a huge factor and can be particularly bad when drywall is being installed. Woodwork is another dust generator, so the more of it that can be done outdoors or off-site, the better it is for you.

Common threats to your indoor air quality

Paint on walls and lacquer or urethane on trim pieces can release irritating chemicals into the air that take weeks to disperse. Older structures may have paint that also contains lead.

Good ventilation and frequent vacuuming can help minimize the impact on indoor air caused by building materials.

Wall-to-wall carpeting and large area rugs are the worst offenders. When new, carpeting, under-padding, and the adhesives used in the flooring industry release chemicals that can trigger eye and throat irritation, skin rashes, and headaches.

Each of these symptoms is a possible sign of the volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) contained within.

Your best option is to avoid carpeting in all its formats in favor of hardwood floors. If that’s not an option, look for carpeting with a “low VOC” rating.

Another thing you can do is roll out the carpet for a week prior to installation while leaving the windows open, whenever possible. Proper ventilation can help get rid of the smelly gasses emitted into the air from carpet, padding, and flooring adhesives. But it can take weeks, sometimes longer.

With natural gas or propane appliances, you’ll need to take extra precautions to keep the indoor air safe for all. It’s always best to have an appliance specialist take care of the installation for you – not just for the stove, but the outside-vented range hood as well.

Check your appliances for any possible leakage. The last thing you want is to have carbon monoxide spewing into your space – in any quantity.

Having it checked out once or twice a year gives you the reassurance that your gas or propane-fired equipment works safely.

Beware. Dangerous fumes can be emitted from non-stick cookware at high heat. This type of cooking appliance was never meant to be used at high temperatures.

stainless steel cookware

But sometimes people forget – or get impatient waiting for their dinner to cook. And that’s just not safe. I don’t recommend using any Teflon-coated cookware for that very reason. You’re better off using stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic pans and bakeware.

Heating and Air-Conditioning Systems

Your air systems can contribute to the poor quality of your indoor air if they’re not operating properly. Routine inspections and maintenance from a certified professional is the answer.

Furnaces and air conditioning systems need to function safely and effectively. And that means proper ventilation through regular filter replacement. You want leak-proof operations and that means inspecting for cracks and holes. Check on you chimney’s condition as well.

Furniture and cabinetry pose additional hazards to your indoor air. Watch out for the presence of formaldehyde in the materials commonly used today in the furniture industry. Upholstered pieces like sofas and loveseats, plus other wood furniture may contain this harmful chemical.

Look out for anything that’s made with particle board. You may be shocked by how much furniture and cabinetry is actually manufactured this way. The problem is that it’s loaded with formaldehyde.

Fortunately, particle board (aka pressboard, pressed wood) surfaces and edges are not usually visible. This helps minimize direct exposure.

Kitchen cabinets are typically made with the same core product. This material is covered with a thin laminate (known as melamine) or a layer of wood veneer. It’s good to know what you’re getting when you buy.

particle board core cabinets

Irritating fumes are strongest when the furniture or cabinetry is brand new. Chemicals dispersed into the air can affect those who are sensitive to it for a long time.

For safer options, select fabrics designated as “low VOC”. You can also choose wooden furniture and cabinets made from plywood instead of particle board.

Plywood uses multiple layers of actual wood (not a composite material like particle board) held together by glue.

Solid wood is an excellent choice too, although it’s a more costly alternative.

Finishes on any wood surface can pose problems. For the safest air quality conditions, a water-based finish is best. But finding furniture and cabinet doors prefinished with environmentally-safe finishes can be a challenge in itself – at least at the present time.

5 Simple Tips For Cleaner, Healthier Indoor Air Anytime

Indoor air can be troublesome, particularly for those of us with respiratory problems. But everyone who shares your space – whether at home or at work – can benefit in a big way by having cleaner air. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to combat common pollutants leaving behind healthier and much more breathable air. Here are Five Simple Tips For Cleaner Indoor Air.

1) Use Natural Cleaning Products

Natural cleaning products are superior for protecting the environment and your air. Commercial cleaning products, on the other hand, often contain dangerous chemicals. While they may efficient in getting rid of dirt and grime, they could also be contributing substantially to your indoor air problem.

cleaning with water

Among the most dangerous ingredients used in cleaning supplies are ammonia and chlorine. When mixed, they produce chloramine – a toxic gas. These ingredients may be present in toilet cleaning solutions, oven cleaner, window cleaner and all-purpose cleaning products.

A Laundry List of Pollutants

The list of contaminants is long and includes many volatile chemicals like sodium hydroxide, trisodium nitrilotriacetate, phosphates, fragrance chemicals, and more. These ingredients are present in many of the cleaning products that are widely available for sale without any restrictions.

When using commercial cleaners in homes and offices, the harsh chemicals within are released into the air. It smells fresh and clean, thanks to the synthetic fragrances that are also added. But make no mistake. These toxins – including those that provide the pleasant scent – remain in the air we breathe.

If you want to improve your indoor air quality, stop using pollution laden chemical cleaners. That’s the bottom line. To change things on a wide scale would require a massive awakening. But you can take steps today to safeguard the air in which you spend a considerable amount of time.

Safe Solutions

Try alternates made from safe ingredients, or make up your own solutions using simple contents like lemon juice, baking soda, vinegar, water, and steam, and essential oils. Pick up a good book on the subject and a couple of quality spray bottles.

natural lemon as a cleaner
Give it a try and you’ll find that natural formulas can work just as well as those toxic chemical blends, without the negative side effects. You’ll be doing everyone in the office in your home a huge favor by changing your approach to interior cleaning.

If you don’t want to be bothered preparing your own cleaning solutions, you can look for products with “No VOC” or “low VOC” labels. It’s also a wise option to look for fragrance-free cleaning products.

Liquids, powders, and pastes tend to be more air-friendly solutions than manufactured sprays because much lower levels of particles are dispersed into the air.

2) Get Rid Of Dust Mites

Dust mites are nasty creatures that are incredibly tiny and difficult to detect. They love carpets, upholstered furniture, mattresses, and pillows. For asthma or allergy sufferers, these microscopic nuisances are public enemy number one.

Walking on or vacuuming carpeting laden with these pests only stirs them up. It actually disperses dust mites throughout the air – making conditions worse.

You’ve got to wipe them out. That’s all there is to it.

The best way to deal with dust mites is to eliminate their favorite stomping grounds wherever possible. If you don’t have to have carpet in your home or office, remove it at once. Opt for hardwood flooring, ceramic, laminate, or linoleum tile instead. Any of those options are better for your air than carpet.

hardwood flooring dust mite free
Change fabric drapes to smoothly-finished blinds that won’t absorb dust. Thoroughly wash all bedding in hot water and do so frequently.

Lower humidity levels can also help since dust mites prefer humid conditions. The cooler and drier the air, the less likely you are to have a dust mite problem.

Air-conditioners and/or dehumidifiers can go a long way towards improving the indoor air quality by making it less hospitable for dust mites.

3) Use Water and Steam To Your Advantage

Water and steam are helpful and healthy ways to clean. A little water to dampen a microfiber cloth is all you need for dusting purposes.

Using a steam cleaner is an excellent way to scrub floors, without resorting to harsh chemicals that further contaminate the air. It might require more frequent cleaning. But you’re protecting the very air that you breathe. So, in the grand scheme of things, it’s a small price to pay.

4) Employ A Quality Vacuum With Hepa Filtration

Ideally, your vacuum will have a rotary brush, powerful suction, and HEPA filters. The better it is at picking things up, the more effective it will be in clearing the air.

Vacuum Cleaner
HEPA filters are efficient at trapping particulate matter in the air. That’s the beauty of HEPA filtration. Without proper filtration in place, any trapped particles are dangerously spewed back out into the air with a vengeance.

This makes breathing conditions worse than they were before you started vacuuming. It’s important that you vacuum frequently and thoroughly and include multiple surfaces like upholstered furniture, area rugs, curtains, and drapes to prevent dust from building up.

5) Test For Gas Emissions

Gases can cause serious air quality issues, so you need to be on top of it. If you have any kind of gas appliances or heating systems, you should have a carbon monoxide detector. But you also need to have your appliances checked routinely by a professional.

With natural gas and propane, it’s important that gas burns cleanly. Stoves can release nitrogen dioxide that when combined with sunlight produces ozone.  It can be particularly bad for asthma sufferers, but can cause breathing problems for anyone.

Your safest option is to outright replace any existing gas and propane systems. But typically, that isn’t a practical alternative. Your next best option is to have a reliable professional assess and service your equipment on a regular basis.

You’re probably spending a good chunk of your time inside – so it makes sense to have the cleanest air possible. There’s no reason why you should have to settle for any less.

How Inexpensive Indoor Plants Help Improve Air Quality

Plants make beautiful additions to any indoor space – whether it’s at work or home. Their vibrant color and calming presence helps to brighten moods and lift spirits. In this article, we’re going to discuss how inexpensive indoor plants help improve air quality.

Green plants naturally recycle air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. As such, all greenery is vital to life on earth. We couldn’t survive without an abundance of oxygen-producing trees and plants.

Nature’s Gifts Deliver In Multiple Ways

But that’s not all these marvels of nature do. Plants also serve as natural air purifiers.

According to scientists at NASA, the University of Georgia, Pennsylvania State University, and other respected institutions of higher education, plants provide additional value by filtering harmful airborne chemicals commonly found in workspaces and homes.

Being closer to nature by bringing plants inside helps make our indoor environments healthier places – in more ways than one.

Choices Abound

There’s a vast array of house plants capable of cleaning and purifying indoor air. These plants do so by absorbing harmful gasses – mostly by way of their leaves, but also through the roots too. Leafy green plants are natural air scrubbers that consume harmful gasses through the porous surface of their leaves.

Leafy green plants are natural air scrubbers that consume harmful gasses through the porous surface of their leaves.

Beware Of The Dangers

Indoor air can be harmful – even more than outdoor air – from all the pollutants that spew from the things we fill our indoor spaces with like furniture and flooring.

Dangerous airborne pollutants include:
Benzene – from plastics, pesticides, lubricants, synthetic fibers, and rubber
Formaldehyde – found in furniture upholstery, carpeting, adhesives and paint
Trichloroethylene – lurking in carpet cleaning formulas, paint removers, and adhesives
Toluene – found in adhesives, acrylic paints, paint thinners, varnishes, and gasoline

Inside, we’re often in confined spaces where these chemicals leach out into the air we breathe.

Without a constant stream of fresh air, these toxic chemicals often remain. So it makes sense to go after these potential dangers in the safest, most natural way possible – with an abundance of indoor plants.

Popularized By NASA

It was the NASA study back in the 1980s that made popular the notion of plants as natural air purifiers. But those tests were completed in controlled conditions.

A fixed amount of these harsh chemicals were introduced into a contained environment. But they were only added one time, instead of continuously. But they were only added one time, instead of continuously.

Let’s Get Real

The problem is that in the real world, chemical emissions from carpet, drapery, paint, and building materials tend to go on for some time. So the degree of effectiveness of these natural air filters in a typical setting probably won’t be as effective as in the controlled study.

The bottom line is that while indoor plants are helpful in removing airborne pollutants, your mileage may vary. So you might want to also add a quality air purifier to your home or office – or both.

How Many Plants Do You Need?

There’s a popular rule of thumb that states that you should have at least one plant for every 100 ft.² of indoor space. But that will likely only produce minimum results. So, the more plants you have, the more your indoor air quality will naturally improve.

So, the more plants you have, the more your indoor air quality will naturally improve.

Look For Opportunities To Add Greenery Indoors

But it’s best to introduce additional plants slowly. Since houseplants release about 97% of the water they absorb, this will increase the humidity of your space. While this may be helpful for minimizing the effects of dry air on the throat and skin, it could make your space uncomfortably humid.

All plants are helpful in removing toxins from the air, at least to some degree. And the larger your army of plants, the more effective they will be collectively in protecting your indoor air.

Some Top Picks For Natural Air Cleaning

While there is a wide variety of plants available, the following are among the best natural air purifier’s you can get:

Cringe-Worthy: Bottled Air For Sale (Joke or For Real?)

Bottled air? A few years ago, I noticed someone selling bags of air on Ebay. It had to be a joke, right? Or, it must be a novelty item, like “canned sunshine” from the state of Florida.

After all, who in their right mind would pay any amount of cash for such a widely available, completely free, and virtually unlimited commodity?

After all, who in their right mind would pay any amount of cash for such a widely available, completely free, and virtually unlimited commodity?

An Eye-Opening Revelation

As it turns out, what started as a joke has become a thriving business. Seems there are many people living in areas of extreme pollution who will gladly shell out good money for a little bit of fresh air.

Air Pollution in Beijing

It’s easy to take something so fundamental to life for granted. But we should appreciate and value the most basic of things like fresh air and clean water. Why? Because many people in the world are not so fortunate.

An Ever-Growing Problem

Pollution is an enormous worldwide problem. In parts of countries like China and India, air pollution is said to be 40-50 worse than it is in the most polluted cities in America.

Air pollution is likely China’s biggest threat to public health. Coal combustion, auto exhaust, and smokestack industries generate extremely high levels of particulate matter in many densely-populated areas.

Taking Matters Into Their Own Hands

Residents have been forced to do whatever they can to protect themselves from the evils in the air. Many wear protective masks when they have to venture out and stay inside as much as they can.

Those who can afford such luxuries are buying up air purifiers and filtration systems despite the fact that…

1) shipping to China is expensive and often voids any warranty…  and…

2) electrical outlets in China only accept 220-volt appliances. So an additional purchase (that of an adapter) is also required with most air purification equipment.

So an additional purchase (that of an adapter) is also required with most air purification equipment.

But that’s not all they’re doing. They’re also purchasing bottled air.

While it may be difficult for anyone living in North America – with its lush abundance of space, fresh water, and clean air  – to imagine, it’s a real concern for others.

Buying packaged air started in 2012 when Chinese businessman, Chen Guangbiao, began selling fresh air in cans that resembled soft drink containers.

However the successful multimillionaire and environmentalist seemed more interested in making a statement about just how bad the air quality was than in actually selling canned air.

But Edmonton, Canada-based Vitality Air is taking their packaged air business seriously.

They ship bottled air collected from Banff National Park to customers in China, mostly in the heavily-polluted cities in the northeast and southern areas of the country.

The Cost of Breathable Air

A 7.7 liter tin of fresh Alberta air costs about $14.99 U.S. That makes it about 50 times more expensive than bottled water in China. Yet the product keeps on selling – shipment after shipment.

As it turns out, Vitality Air’s founders were among those early pioneers selling bags of air on eBay. What began mostly as a laughing matter turned into a business once they realized there was a market for this sort of thing.

A Growing Market

Today, Vitality Air sells both bottled air and oxygen. But China isn’t their only market. They also have customers in the Middle East, India – and even North America.

It seems that fresh air is becoming a luxury for more people. It’s a sad fact. Tragic, actually.

But when you’re surrounded by smog, with limited relocation options – what are you going to do? Just being able to breathe a little bit of fresh, clean air is something to be cherished. It’s not something any of Vitality Air’s customers take for granted.

Can World’s Largest Air Purifier Help Clean Toxic City Air?

When I first happened upon this device – I was amazed. It’s the world’s largest air purifier, designed to take on the world’s pollution woes in a whole new way.

Thinking Big

It’s called the Smog Free Tower and it’s a stylish, oblong structure that stands approximately 23 feet tall and is capable of processing more than 30,000 cubic meters of air every hour.

smog free tower outdoor air purifer

Air pollution is no joke. Harmful particulates and toxic chemicals are spewed into the air in huge amounts every single day. Nobody likes it. Yet, most of us accept it as a necessary evil of the world we live in today.

Each of us can take practical steps to purify the indoor environments in which we live and work. But besides planting more trees and a stricter enforcement of environmental regulations – particularly for industry – it doesn’t seem like much is being done on the air pollution front.

Until now.

Enter Daan Roosegaard and his team of engineers in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It took more than 3 years of research and development before the tower became a reality. But the result is something of significance and global potential.

Clever Design and Ingenuity

The tower utilizes about 1400 watts of sustainable energy. But Roosegaard’s plan is to eventually convert the towers into self-supporting, solar powered units.

As an air scrubber, the Smog Free Tower cleans an impressive amount of air every hour. It works much the same way as some indoor air purifiers – but on a much larger scale.

Outside air is drawn into the tower. Once the air is inside the chamber, it’s then  subjected to positive ions. These ions magnetically attract fine dust particles, which are collected as they removed from the air.

worlds largest air purifier

From Waste To Wanted Product

If that’s all this machine did, it would be notable. But the Smog Free Tower does more.

Not only does the tower scrub the air and remove problem causing contaminants, it also takes this waste material and turns it into something useful, in this case, artificial gemstones.

It condenses and compresses under high-pressure those tiny particles suspended in the air. Then it transforms these pollutants into simulated gemstones that can be used in various pieces of jewelry.

Genius At Work

The tower filters polluted outside air by drawing in all the particulate matter it can. But instead of disposing of those particles, it turns them into something of value.

Impressive, to say the least.

While the first prototype was installed in Rotterdam, plenty of other cities worldwide have shown interest in the tower including Beijing, Paris, and Mumbai.

As a kid in school, I dreamed about developing this kind of solution to an ever-growing global problem. But Daan Roosegaard and his team went much further. They actually brought their vision to life.

True Entrepreneurial Spirit

Not only did they tackle a huge problem – they did so independently. The tower wasn’t funded by government or big business. Instead, this committed group (designer and engineers) did it on their own with help from the general public through crowd-funding.

The potential impact is huge. Imagine one of these towers on top of or beside every factory in the world.  Wouldn’t that make a huge difference in the amount of pollution in the air that we breathe?

The Start of Something Big?

Air pollution is a serious issue. It’s a contributing factor in many health issues today. Daan Roosegaard and his team should be applauded for their efforts.

The possibilities here are endless. The smoke-free tower represents the kind of creative thinking that could make it happen and save our planet.

Austin Air Healthmate 400 Review

This Austin Air Healthmate 400 review was written to provide some realistic answers for anyone considering buying a new air purification system. The Healthmate 400 (also known as the HM400 as well as the A400) is a rock-solid filtration device that provides thorough air cleaning.

In a hurry? Click here to grab a great deal on an Austin Air Healthmate 400 at Amazon.

This powerful purifier removes large and small particles, harmful chemicals, and noxious gases.

If you’re looking to reduce or eliminate allergy symptoms like congestion, sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, runny nose, dry mouth, and sore throat- the Healthmate could be ideal for you. It also helps to minimize asthma attacks and the wheezing that often goes with those attacks.

Austin Air Purifier Improves SleepAustin Air’s Healthmate 400 can dramatically improve the quality of your sleep.

This is important because sleep is essential for restoring the body, strengthening the immune system and maintaining good health overall.

Using true medical grade HEPA filtration to capture and remove 99.97% of airborne particles as little as .3 micron in size, the 400 is highly effective in doing what it’s supposed to do. It also removes up to 95% of particles of .1 micron and smaller.

That’s some serious filtration and purification capability by any standard.

All Austin Air filters themselves are made from this same medical grade HEPA. So it doesn’t really matter which model you buy. Either way, you’re getting the best HEPA protection available in this class of quality air purifiers.

These filters are also useful in capturing and containing dust, pollen, smoke, chemicals, bacteria, viruses and other pollutants.

The Austin Air Healthmate 400 is a quality, well-made unit with an all-steel casing. It’s built to last and perform for customers for years. So you can count on the Healthmate 400 to deliver fresher, cleaner air 24/7 for a long time to come.

One of these machines can handle any room up to 1500 ft.², according to the manufacturer’s specifications. But one thing to remember is that this applies to one room or open area. Not one that’s divided by hallways, stairways, or multiple floors.

Single Room Air PurificationEssentially, you should think of these purifiers as portable units. They are designed to service one room – or at least, one room at a time.

This means that if you’re buying one purifier for a 1500 square-foot home, you’re bound to be disappointed with the results due to the layout of a typical home with several rooms for different purposes.

Think of these units and competing products as room air purifiers. That’s really what they are. They’re designed and capable of cleaning one room at a time.

What’s interesting is that although the manufacturer suggests rooms up to 1500 ft.² for the Healthmate 400, customers who are most satisfied with their purchases have used the 400 model in rooms that are much smaller. In fact, happy buyers seem to be using this device in rooms that average around 800 ft.².

This is where the Austin Air Healthmate 400 seems to work particularly well – in spaces of approximately 750 to 1000 ft.².

It’s in this range where the Healthmate 400 seems to deliver the best value. Although there is a significant upfront cost when purchasing, it is less than several competing models.

According to WebMD, HEPA filters are proven to remove dust, dust mites, dander, mold spores, and pollen from the air. HEPA is the safest, surest, and most respected purification method available. And nobody makes a better, more effective HEPA filter than Austin Air.

Austin Healthmate Plus Review

The Healthmate 400 represents the “standard” unit offered by Austin Air. But they also provide the Healthmate PLUS (also referred to as the 450, HM450 and A450).

Both the STANDARD and PLUS models are proven performers when it comes to purifying the air. But the Healthmate PLUS is the best choice for anyone who has any sort of chemical sensitivity. This makes it a choice for those living in contaminated areas, with higher levels of particles in the air.

If you or anyone in your office or family tends to suffer from a serious respiratory condition, the Healthmate PLUS is likely the machine that would best serve your purposes and provide the most relief.

Which model is most effective at removing VOCs from the air? Answer: the Healthmate PLUS.

What’s MORE About The PLUS?

The PLUS model contains everything the STANDARD does, plus an additional carbon filter that’s infused with potassium iodide. This added filter is designed to pull dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene and more from your indoor air.

The Healthmate PLUS is a wise choice for particularly contaminated air, or where volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) are known to be present. That’s not to say that this is all the PLUS device does.

It also has all the other filtering capabilities of the Austin Air STANDARD purifier. So you can count on it to remove things like dust, dust mites, pollen, smoke, bacteria and viruses as well.

Again, the manufacturer claims that this purification system is ideal for up to 1500 ft.² of space. But for best results, I suggest scaling that down to around 750 to 1000 ft.². Therefore, if your office or open area floor space is 2000 ft.² for example, I would recommend acquiring two of these units. That should do an admirable job of purifying the air for you.

clean airWith plenty of clean air generated, everyone can breathe easier.

Air Quality Control

It’s important to monitor the quality of your air on an ongoing basis. Never take your fresh air for granted. Keep on top of any noticeable change and check on both the pre-filter and main filter.

It’s likely time for a change if regular cleaning doesn’t do the trick.

Remember that this system has an additional filter built into it and that one contains carbon. It’s actually a combination of carbon and zeolite that protects you against dangerous VOCs in the air.

The problem though is that activated carbon filters can become saturated through use. So it’s always best to err on the side of caution and monitor your filter and replace it frequently.

Although this means spending more money, it will definitely ensure that you will most certainly benefit from the cleaner air you’ll be breathing.

What Austin Air Purifier Should You Buy?

Any Austin Air purifier is a stellar choice – as long as the room size is well within the device’s practical capacity. With Austin, you can be assured of getting cleaner indoor air. And chances are, you’ll easily detect just how much fresher and healthier the air feels.

Austin Air Purifier Produces Fresh Air Inside

If you or those around you have sensitivities to airborne particles or gasses, this device will surely be a blessing. Anyone who works or lives in a busy urban area, or close to major roadways will certainly benefit by having an Austin Air device nearby.

Even people living on farms appreciate the clean air they get inside their homes, thanks to the Healthmate purifier.

You get the same technology built into every Austin Air model. The differences lie in the size of the space in which the machine will be used.

This company also offers a few additional options like their Bedroom Air Purifier and the Baby’s Breath model for specific use applications. Additionally, they supply various PLUS models for added protection to those who are most adversely affected by airborne chemicals.

Let’s Be Realistic

While there are several different models in the Austin Air lineup, you want to choose based on your own specific needs.

Room size and air issues you are currently facing should be the two main considerations. It’s best to go well within the suggested allowances, rather than pushing the boundaries.

For best results, you don’t want to push the room size to the limit because there’s only so much one machine can do. It doesn’t matter what brand you buy. It’s always going to produce better results for you when it’s not working at capacity.

I suggest taking what any manufacturer states as the allowable room size and reducing it by 30% to 50%. That’s the best way to ensure that you will not just be satisfied, but more than likely delighted with your new results.

Your Mileage May Vary

If the stated room size allowance is up to 1000 square feet, for example, figure on the Healthmate 400 machine being most effective in the 500 to 700 square-foot range.

That’s not to say it won’t work for your purposes in larger spaces. It may. Then again, it may not. It’s just that manufacturers in many different industries have been known to overstate things. It’s all part of their marketing and sales effort. But smart consumers are beginning to realize this in larger numbers.

Manufacturer’s Spin?

It’s just that manufacturers in many different industries have been known to overstate things. It’s all part of their marketing and sales effort. But smart consumers are beginning to realize this in larger numbers.

Experience tells me that you’ll be much happier with your purchase when you see through the seller’s claims and look at things from a slightly different perspective. The whole idea is to get relief and lots of fresher, healthier indoor air flowing so that everyone can enjoy the benefits that go with it.

Quality Costs Money

Quality air purifiers of any brand are not cheap. There’s just no way to avoid making a significant investment. The good news is that a quality brand of air purifier like Austin Air can and does make a world of difference.

After all, nothing is more important than having clean, breathable air when you’re spending at least eight hours of your day in any particular location on the job or at home.

Choose Appropriately

Room size is the number one consideration when it comes to choosing Austin or any other purifier on the market. Your room size will tell you whether you should be considering  a “Standard” or “Healthmate Jr” model.

If an Austin Air Healthmate Jr will meet your needs, you can save yourself some money by opting for this lower-priced model. But these units tend to work best in smaller rooms and may not appear to be working at all in larger spaces.

It’s possible that the larger capacity “Standard” model would be a better choice for you. Measure the room you’re planning to use it in and then look at the best available options to suit.

What Makes Austin Air Purifiers Different?

The Austin Healthmate is said to remove more than 300 particulates in the air. With a 360° intake to efficiently pull in more air by drawing it from all sides of the machine, the Austin air purifier stands apart from competitors.

The entire lower section of the device is all air intake, allowing greater processing capability in every direction.

4 Stages To the Process

Only Austin Air offers a four-stage air filtration’s system.

During the first stage of operations, the large pre-filter captures and contains larger particles like pet dander, hair, and dust.

At stage two, the medium-sized pre-filter seizes mid-size to small particles like pollen and mold spores.

During stage number three, the Austin Air Healthmate 400 utilizes a 15 pound (activated carbon and zeolite) filter to eliminate harmful gasses, chemicals, and odors.

Finally, the fourth stage of filtering features a massive 60 ft.² certified medical HEPA filter, blocking 99.97% of the remaining particles in the air as small as .3 micron.

The “Carbon” Factor

The more carbon a filter contains the better it is at filtering such things as smoke and chemicals from the air. Therefore, the “standard” Healthmate is more powerful than the Healthmate JR in containing those pollutants.

Also, as one might expect, the smaller Healthmate Junior purifier takes longer to clean the same size room than does the larger, standard edition.

The Healthmate 400 is a powerful unit that’s particularly effective for people with sensitivity to chemicals. It’s designed to be as effective in your office or home as it is in the many hospitals and operating rooms in which this model is used.

What To Expect When You Order an Austin Air Purifier Healthmate 400

Shipping is prompt and affordable. An added perk is that the 400 arrives fully assembled and in ready-to-use condition. Just open up the box, plug in your brand new unit and benefit from the fresh air it produces. It’s easy to use with a simple three-speed (low, medium and high) dial.

Operating costs for this type of device average less than a penny per hour of actual use. It’s a rugged machine that’s built to run 24 hours a day for years – without ever overheating.

Standard on the Healthmate 400 is the 120 V three prong plug. At the highest speed power consumption is a mere 135 Watts. making it an energy efficient air purifier.

Gets Rid Of Harmful Airborne Pollutants

For removing chemical smells from new flooring, memory foam, upholstery and any renovation work you may have ongoing at any time, the Healthmate 400 does an excellent job.

Austin Air Healthmate 400 Review

It can take several days, or even weeks to get rid of the gasses emitted from some of these materials. But this workhorse air cleaner can certainly do the job safely – without any downside.

What People Like About the Austin Healthmate Air Purifier

First and foremost, what customers love is how well this machine performs in cleaning the air. The Healthmate clearly delivers effective air purification – without any downside (other than cost).

It’s a quality device that is rated for use in hospitals and has been used by numerous government departments and agencies.

The Healthmate has solved indoor air pollution issues where lesser units have failed repeatedly.

A Noticeable Step Up From Everyday Brands

In many cases, the Healthmate is not the first air purifier a customer has owned.

More often than not, it is purchased as a hopeful replacement for some other device that just didn’t get the job done. Once it has been fired up, it usually doesn’t take too long to notice the difference intelligent engineering makes.

The powder-coated, all metal exterior looks and feels like it will last for decades. Since it’s made of metal, there’s no harmful off-gassing from the unit that can occur from plastic devices.

On the low and medium settings, the sound is acceptable to the huge majority of buyers. At these levels, almost nobody is bothered by  it. It’s an ambient “white noise” that you hear while the machine scrubs the air and alleviates most common symptoms quickly. At the top speed, it is noticeably louder – but not excessively so.

Compact and Built To Last

Austin Air’s Healthmate 400 is a relatively compact unit that’s unobtrusive. One might even call it attractive and with five optional finishes, you can make it fit nicely with the decor of any office or home.

Austin Air Fits Any Decor

Both the machine and the filter have been engineered to provide years of reliable service.

It takes large volumes of air in from all sides of the device and then blows out fresh air through the top.

But it does so on an angle, rather than straight up, which tends to refresh a room faster than comparable brands.

Looks Good Anywhere

With a clean, simple and attractive design, the Healthmate fits in pretty well anywhere. It’s a convenient size for placement on most any table or floor.

Aesthetically, it’s pleasing to the eye and its light enough to move around from room to room if necessary, without straining. It’s also easy to set up and operate, with simple, idiot-proof controls.

Environmentally-Friendly Purification

What’s particularly interesting is that the Healthmate 400 comes with a power cord that is shielded to reduce EMF emissions. Most manufacturers don’t bother to do so, but Austin Air does. The PLUS model also is capable of handily filtering harmful VOCs.

You’ll likely agree that the Austin Air Healthmate is a better quality machine than you’ll find in the big box stores. Users report having fewer shared viruses and colds – common nuisances that often spread like wildfire in confined spaces.

What Some People Don’t Like About the Austin Air Healthmate 400

On the highest setting, the machine is loud – louder than most people expected in advance. On the other hand, it’s loud because it’s filtering a large amount of their quickly and efficiently and this requires additional power.

It’s a costly device, to be sure. Definitely more expensive than the lower end units put out by companies like Honeywell or Oreck.

But let’s be honest here. We’re essentially talking about two different classes of purifiers. Once you step up to a “professional” grade device, you’ve got to know that it’s going to cost you more money.

Location is Important

Finding the right location where the machine can be positioned for maximum efficiency and purification power can be a challenge. This is especially true in congested spaces – whether it’s at work or home.

You might find it helpful to try a few different locations. Ideally, you want noticeably cleaner air, without having your device stick out like a sore thumb.

Another common complaint is that there is no indicator light to notify one when the filter is in need of replacement. Some machines do have this feature, but it is only a timer. You can easily track this for yourself and your personal calendar. No big deal there.

Check Your Shipment Once It Arrives

Packaging is another complaint I’ve heard in the past. Clearly, some units were shipped out without as much protective wrapping as should’ve been used. I suspect that this these shipments came from a rather careless independent dealer. Either that or somebody was asleep at the switch.

With such detailed thinking having gone into the engineering and design of the Austin Air Healthmate purifier, it seems completely backwards that the company would risk damaging their machines and having to deal with the fallout due to carelessness and ill-conceived packaging.

Why Should I Advertise For the Manufacturer?

Some find the Austin Air logo on the filtration device to be not very attractive. It’s kind of like those nameplates car dealers stick on your new car before you get to drive it off the lot. While most accept it, others find this practice obnoxious and even offensive because the customer is actually advertising the brand after paying good money to acquire the product.

The Biggest Pain

Perhaps the biggest beef with Austin Air is the high cost of replacement filters. This is certainly understandable and it’s a complaint every manufacturer hears.

The fact is that Austin Air filters are substantially more expensive than those of most competitors. However, they are also much more elaborate and longer-lasting – by a large margin – than anything else on the market.

But unless you get multiple years of use out of a single filter, it is an expensive element. The manufacturer suggests that under normal conditions a filter should last five years before it needs changing.

It’s not all that expensive when costs are carried over five years. Besides, no matter what brand you buy, replacing filters on an ongoing basis is one of those things you’ll have to do to enjoy clean air.

Austin Air Purifier Ozone?

One added benefit of an Austin Air purifier is that the manufacturer does not use electrostatic action or ion generation. Therefore, the Austin Air HealthMate does NOT emit any harmful by-products such as Ozone. The only thing this machine produces is fresher, cleaner air.

Ozone-Free Air

The Verdict: Highly Recommended

It’s a winner! The Healthmate 400 is a solid machine backed by a company with a track record of performance. With proper care and filter replacement, your Healthmate 400 should last several years, making it a sound investment.

Will it be the answer for you? It’s highly likely that it will. Consider the following three questions:

1. Where (in what environment) will the purifier be used?
2. What is the overall square footage of the room?
3. Will the machine be regularly cleaned, maintained, and monitored?

Choose an air purifier based on your needs and be sure to keep an eye on it. That’s the best way to get the most out of your investment, regardless of the brand you ultimately buy.

For those with any sort of chemical sensitivity, Austin Air is an obvious choice in the marketplace. But it’s also a sound option for anyone who wants cleaner, safer air inside – at work or at home.

Nothing in this world is more important to a lifetime of health and well-being than having clean air to breathe.

With this purifier on hand, you can expect fewer attacks and interruptions from coughing, wheezing, runny nose, dry mouth, sore throat, sneezing, and so on.

Up and Running In No Time At All

When you receive your brand new Austin Air unit, all you have to do is unbox it and find a location close to an outlet but away from the walls. Then simply plug it in and set the speed of your choice.

Chances are that you’ll find yourself snoring less and enjoying a deeper, more restorative sleep with this compact device. That in itself is a huge benefit. But there’s more to the Jr than meets the eye.

The Healthmate JR serves up cleaner, fresher air with a significant reduction in airborne particles and dangerous gasses. It is meant to be used in rooms up to 700 ft.² (according to the manufacturer).

But realistically, to achieve optimum results, I’ve discovered that these and other comparable air purification units on the market today are best suited to smaller rooms.

Ideal Room Size

In the case of the Healthmate Jr, interior spaces of anywhere from 200 to 500 ft.², seem to be ideal. It’s powerful and effective in scrubbing the air clean of virtually all problematic pollutants – and that’s no small feat.

office air purifier

A proven performer, the Healthmate Jr is quite a useful tool for removing dust, dust mites, pollen, smoke, bacteria and viruses in smaller areas.

In fact, that’s what it’s designed to do.

However, in larger spaces, it’s just not going to produce the same kind of results.

How Effective is The Austin Air Healthmate Jr ?

When looking at purchasing a real air purifier (not the cheap department store variety) what should be an important consideration is how often the room air changes in any given hour. That’s one of the keys to determining the real effectiveness and value of any air purifier.

By “air changes” I mean, how many times in every 60 minutes is the machine able to process polluted room air and generate fresh clean air?

Healthmate JR Review

The more air changes carried out – the cleaner the air is to breathe. Ahhhh… fresh air. Can you feel it?

That’s where you’ll really notice the beneficial effects of owning an Austin air purifier.

It performs day in and day out, efficiently “processing” bad air and generating safer, breathable air reasonably fast.

Test Results Revealed

In testing, the Austin Air Healthmate Jr delivered the following results in the corresponding room sizes:

750 square-foot room:  Two air changes per hour
375 square-foot room: Four air changes per hour
250 square-foot room: Six air changes per hour

Essentially, the Healthmate Jr appears to be twice as effective at purifying the air in a room that’s about half the maximum size suggested by the manufacturer. No surprise there. Additionally, it seems to be about three times more effective in a room that is one-third the size of the largest recommended space.

A Budget-Friendly Option

The Austin Air Healthmate Jr makes an excellent choice for those on a tighter budget. You cannot, however, expect it to perform in larger rooms with any sort of noticeable results.

Sounds logical, doesn’t it?

Unfortunately, the appeal of a lower price can at times impair the sound reasoning of logic. If you read a lot of reviews online, it’s not hard to see why some people are disappointed. But it often has little to do with the equipment itself and everything to do with how that machine is being used.

How Much Electricity Does It Use?

In terms of power consumption, the Healthmate Junior uses 80 Watts at high speed, 41 Watts at medium speed, and 25 Watts at low speed.

The Healthmate Jr PLUS model (somewhat different from the Jr) is the best choice for chemical protection against things like formaldehyde and benzene. If sensitivity to airborne chemicals is an issue – it makes sense to give serious consideration to the PLUS model. For best results, always be sure to follow our recommended room size specifications.

Medical-Quality HEPA

The Healthmate Jr comes with a 30 ft.² medical quality HEPA filter inside (exactly half of what’s contained in the Healthmate 400), and 7 pounds of granular carbon and zeolite. It’s the carbon and zeolite that helps to filter out odors, chemicals, and gasses.

Where are Austin Air Purifiers Made?

Unlike virtually every competitor, Austin Air’s purifiers are made right here at home, in the USA. The company, Austin Air, is headquartered in Buffalo, New York and have been producing quality air purifiers for a few decades now.

American made air purifiers

Among all air purifier manufacturers, Austin Air is the “most American”. It’s not an easy accomplishment to maintain a strong manufacturing operation domestically, in the age of outsourcing and a truly global economy.

But that’s exactly what they’ve achieved. And the added advantage of American-made quality is something that many buyers have come to appreciate even more these days.

Battle-Tested and Ready

Austin Air purifiers have been tested by some of the world’s top laboratories and agencies, including the US Army Corps of Engineers. Many of their purification units are now being used in hospitals and surgical rooms, due to the proven results due at least in part to the medical grade HEPA filtration system inside every Austin Air product.

Austin Air systems were the natural choice of the Red Cross and FEMA in the aftermath of the 911 tragedy. When a sizable part of New York City was covered in dust from the collapsed World Trade Center towers and thousands faced a serious health risk, Austin Air purifiers answered the call.

Austin Air Purifier Warranty

All Austin purification systems come with a five-year warranty on parts and labor. It’s a strong warranty that’s better than what the majority of competitors offer. The one exception is Alen Air. That company that offers a lifetime warranty on all of their air purifiers.

Austin Air also offers a 30-day money back guarantee. Therefore, should you not be satisfied with your Austin Air Healthsmart Jr (or any other air cleaner Austin Air supplies), your total risk is the cost of shipping. That part is non-refundable – but everything else is, within the 30-day window.

Take The Long-Term View

When considering a purchase of any quality air purifier, you may find it helpful to take a look at the big picture.

Can this air cleaner serve my purposes for the office or home air purification I require, steadily and reliably for the next five years?

That’s the question you need to ponder.

Many people have had Austin Air units – even multiple units – for 10 years or more. Ideally, that’s what you want too because it means maximum value for your investment. Once you step up to something more than the basic devices sold at some of the big box stores, it does become more of an investment than an incidental purchase.

Let’s Get Serious

air filtration

Serious air filtration equipment costs serious money. There’s just no getting around this fact.

It’s not just the substantial money you’ll have to fork over for any of these devices themselves, but for the replacement filters too. Filters are an ongoing but absolutely necessary cost – no matter what brand or model you settle on.

Replacement Filters

At some point, your machine is going to require a brand new filter and no filter comes cheap. Knowing this before you buy allows you to factor in the added costs, instead of being blindsided down the road when your purifier stops dong what it’s supposed to do.

What I suggest is that you plan for your purchase to serve you over the next five years. Hopefully, it will last much longer than that. But if you can enjoy the benefits of fresh clean air every day for five years, how much value and comfort would that add to your life?

Look Into The Future

long-term value of air purifierWhen you look at your potential Austin Air purifier purchase as a five-year product, it gives you a different perspective. Since that’s the duration of your parts and labor warranty, it makes sense to look at it this way.

The machine itself is warranted for five years. Also, the expected lifespan of the Austin Air HEPA filter is five years, under normal circumstances.

Is It Worth It?

Consider this: If the purchase price of your ready-to-go unit is all you ever pay over the next five years and the purifier serves its purpose over that time, is it a worthwhile buy?

Once you have your total costs, divide that figure by 5 to determine the cost per year. Next, divide your total cost by 60. This will give you your overall cost per month. Then consider whether it makes sense to purchase or not.

Energy Efficient Air Purifier

There is one other cost and that is the cost to run your Austin Air purifier. Thankfully, electricity costs on these units are minimal.

It takes about the same amount of energy to run your Austin Air Healthmate Jr air purifier as it does to power up a light-bulb.

Another option is to factor in the added cost of one service call and one filter replacement.

The service call itself is covered by the warranty. But you’ll have to pay to ship your machine to the Austin Air plant in Buffalo, NY.

A Cautious Projection

If you want to be extra careful, you might assume that the filter lasts only half the recommended time. So this means you would have to replace the filter at the 2 1/2 year mark.

Now review what your approximate cost would be over five years. Then calculate costs per year. Finally, figure out what it would cost you every month. This is the price you’ll have to pay to have fresher, cleaner air, 24/7 in your designated room from this device. You can do the same with any other brand you may be considering.

Adjusted Price/ Value Comparison

Is it worth it at this “adjusted” price?

It’s interesting when you play with these numbers and you don’t automatically assume that your machine will last forever and your filter will go the distance. When you expect things to last longer and they fail prematurely – that’s causes the most frustration. That’s when any buyer is most disappointed.

I urge you to consider realistically what your monthly costs could actually be. This is the best way to avoid disappointment with any major purchase like a quality air purifier. In this case, crunch the numbers and then ask yourself  – is it worth having healthy indoor air to breathe for $X monthly?

Don’t Overlook The Objective Of Fresh Indoor Air

Remember, this is only an estimate. But it’s something that gives you a buffer. And don’t forget how important it is to breathe healthy air.

Another advantage Austin Air offers is their prorated filter warranty. I don’t see any other manufacturer offering anything comparable. Then again, no other filters in this class are this expensive either.

There’s no question that they have the best quality filters that are designed to operate effectively under normal conditions for five years.

However, if your filter does not last five years, Austin Air will take this into account when you order a replacement and this will save some money. It’s not the full amount many people expect, but it does get you a replacement filter at a nice discount.

How To Use Your Austin Air Purifier

Many people get the most benefit by having an Austin Air Healthmate purifier in their bedroom. Breathing clean air at night helps to strengthen the immune system, giving you a more restful and rejuvenating sleep.

With cleaner air, it’s less taxing on the immune system, allowing the body a chance to easily rest, restore, and repair itself while you are sleeping.

The thing to remember is to confine your Healthmate Jr to a single room. That is all it’s designed to handle and the Jr is meant for smaller rooms as a rule.

Also, be sure to allow adequate space on all sides. This means having a minimum of 6 to 10 inches of space on all sides. When you first unleash this mini beast in a particular room, turn it to “high” and close the door. Allow Austin Air’s engineering to do its work for a couple of hours and then check back and notice the improvement in the air quality.

At least 30% of your time is spent sleeping or working. So it makes sense to give yourself the best possible conditions in these environments.

A Solution For Home and Office

At the office, you can place your Austin Air device – or whatever quality air purifier you decide on – anywhere you like. But locating it close to any problem sources should give you better results. You could place it next to any workstation, as long as you remember to leave adequate space around the device.

Airflow is important for the machine to attain maximum efficiency. You want it to be able to draw air in from all sides. That’s how it’s able to process air quickly and get rid of any impurities.

All Austin Air devices are designed to run twenty-four hours a day. Continuous use can make a world of difference to the quality of your air.

It’s easy to adjust the fan speed to suit. At top speed, it’s noisy. But most buyers have no problem with the noise generated at the lower two speeds. For best results and to create the healthiest indoor environment, keep your device running all the time if you can.

What Results Can You Expect?

It all depends on the conditions and symptoms you’re experiencing. You also need to take into account the current quality of air in the room and outside too since that air eventually comes inside. If dust and pollen are major concerns, you would benefit by replacing the pre-filter often. It’s an inexpensive way to get the best performance out of your Healthmate Jr purifier.

How To Get the Most Out of Any Austin Air Purifier

Vacuum outside and inside the housing frequently. This alone can extend the life of your purifier. Just be sure to do so with a HEPA vacuum cleaner. Otherwise, you may be defeating the purpose and spewing more pollutants back into the air.

It’s easy to take apart and replace the filters and pre-filter on any Austin Air Healthmate. I recommend changing the pre-filter every year and then setting the date you do this in your personal calendar so you don’t forget.

Clean and replace the pre-filter as needed. This is a foam filter, so after vacuuming, you can rinse it. Just be sure to dry it completely before putting it back into place. Do this often and you will more than likely get more years of service out of your machine.

Check The Air

Monitor the air quality to detect when the main filter unit requires a change and do so without any unnecessary delay. If the filter is saturated with pollutants – it can’t be doing you much good.

Filter life is affected by the relative cleanliness of the room air and the speed level to which you have set your purifier. Don’t be surprised to see caked-on dust in and around the pre-filter. That’s a strong indicator that your Austin Healthmate is working well.

Always double-check to make sure to install the replacement filters correctly. If you don’t, it cannot trap pollutants effectively and this means the same harmful elements will get pumped right back into the room.

What’s The Verdict on the Austin Air Healthmate Jr?

Air purifiers are numerous. But high-quality machines made for small to medium-sized rooms are not so common. For small to average size rooms – that’s where this air cleaner really shines.

As discussed throughout this Austin Air Healthmate Jr Review, this model uses the exact same technology that’s built into every Austin Air system. But it does so on a smaller scale. This includes the 4-step filtration process featuring a medical grade HEPA filter, designed to last longer than competing brands.

If you’re looking for a solid, dependable air purification system for smaller areas, this one just might be your best bet. For solid value at a decent price and a 5-year warranty, the Healthmate Jr should at least warrant your serious consideration as your room purifier of choice.

Alen BreatheSmart Air Purifier Review: Stop Dumb Breathing Now

As you’re about to learn in this Alen Breathesmart air purifier review, this company produces quality goods and they’ve been doing so for the last ten+ years. They’re now a well-known and respected name in the industry.

In a rush? Click here to find the Alen Breathesmart Air Purifier at an excellent price on Amazon.

Alen Air Breathesmart Review

What really works in Alen Air’s favor (and subsequently, every customer’s favor too) is their intelligent design concepts and engineering. Combined, this intelligence delivers clean air efficiently from attractive air purifiers that fit any style of decor.

The BreatheSmart is not some cheap filtration unit – it’s a machine that should serve you for years. Therefore, due diligence is suggested before making such a purchase.

Quality Costs More – But It Pays Off Too

Top quality air purifiers all have significant price tags attached. So it’s best to consider this kind of purchase as a long-term investment. By all accounts, the BreatheSmart is a solid and reliable machine that produces impressive results. It’s the kind of investment that pays over and over again.

The Alen BreatheSmart comes with an impressive warranty – as do all of their air purifier products. The warranty is good for a lifetime – as long as you are the original owner and you pay attention to maintaining the machine properly. Sounds pretty fair to me.

There’s no hidden fine print with impossible to meet conditions. Alen chose a more straightforward approach. Something completely different from the so-called, 25-year warranty provided on my recently purchased hardwood flooring.

That “warranty” basically said that if anyone walked on the floor in anything other than soft-soled slippers, the warranty was null and void. And if you had a pet in the house, don’t even waste your time trying to make a claim.

Alen has made a bold move by going against the tide. Imagine that – a company that’s willing to stand behind their products and guarantee that they function as they should. Pretty impressive in my book.

It’s what sets Alen apart and makes them a market leader. When you treat your machine with care and use it as directed, it should prove to be a huge benefit to you and all those who share your indoor space.

The Alen Corp. warranty works when the filters are used properly and replaced on schedule. Common sense type of stuff. You cannot disregard the unit and expect Alen to outright replace it when it stops working. Sounds logical, doesn’t it?

When You Need Something More

BreatheSmart is a larger capacity, more heavy duty purifier than the popular T 500 Tower. And it has a 35% larger capacity than the Fit50. It’s a sizable box that’s both well-designed and aesthetically pleasing. With 14 different color and wood-grain finish options, it can fit into most any office or home decor.

Customized design and functionality is another way Alen Air gains an edge over many competing brands. Not only can you choose the front cover of your BreatheSmart air purifier and determine its appearance, you can also – and more importantly – address the specific problems or symptoms you’re currently experiencing  with your indoor air.

Whatever air problem you would like to resolve, there’s probably a specific HEPA filter for that purpose – or at least one that will address the issue more effectively.

The Alen BreatheSmart is a large unit. Once you move up to a “serious” air purifier, you’re going to have to step up to a larger, heavier-duty machine. And that’s what you’re getting here.

It’s Not All Lollipops and Ice Cream

But with the larger size comes two not so pleasant effects: 1) a larger and louder motor and 2) a higher sticker price. That seems to be the way, no matter what brand you select. On the plus side, you’re investing in something that should serve you for years, if not decades.

The Alen BreatheSmart is a durable machine backed by the strongest warranty in the industry. It offers a higher capacity to process and purify the air inside your room.

This increased capability naturally requires a stronger motor. Thankfully, the noise produced by the motor and fan only seems to be an issue at higher speeds.

You probably wouldn’t want to run it at turbo speed (the highest setting) when you’re trying to focus on your work or get to sleep. It’s best to crank the BreatheSmart up when you’re not in the room so the noise is a non-issue.

Options Add Flexibility

As is the case with every Alen air purifier, there are four filter options that you can choose from in addition to the standard (HEPA-Pure) filter provided with the unit.

Those four options are:

  • HEPA – Pure (dust, allergens)
  • Silver (bacteria, germs)
  • OdorCell (smoke, heavy odors)
  • FreshPlus (chemicals and VOCs)

Alen claims that the BreatheSmart efficiently purifies the air in large rooms and open spaces up to 1100 ft.² . They also state that this device produces fresh, clean air throughout in as little as two hours. This does require the machine to run on “turbo” – the highest setting.

The Fit50 offers a similar design style and functionality to the BreatheSmart, but according to the manufacturer, it’s made for rooms of up to 800 ft.².

Better Safe Than Sorry

Some buyers may achieve similar results. But for a more accurate projection, I like to revise those numbers downward. Being more conservative in my estimates has proven helpful in avoiding disappointing products.

Your results may vary. That’s something you should always keep in mind with any product. Your results also depend on the condition of the indoor air your particular symptoms and the severity of such.

In some environments, the air is quite good as it is. In those cases, I would probably opt for a smaller machine like the T500, instead of going for the pricier BreatheSmart.

As a rule of thumb, if you reduce the claimed size by 1/3 to 1/2, you’re most likely going to experience a positive outcome with any quality air purifier. Therefore, a room size of  approximately 550 ft.² up to 800 ft.² should be very well-served by the BreatheSmart.

That’s not to say that you won’t be thrilled with the performance of this machine in a1100 or 1200 square-foot room. It could happen. And if that’s the case – fantastic – I’m thrilled for you!

I simply prefer caution instead of optimism when forking over several hundred dollars of your hard-earned cash. Just to be absolutely clear, the odds of this machine (or likely most, for that matter) producing great results increases when the room is somewhat smaller than the manufacturer’s suggested capacity.

Most buyers seem fully satisfied with their BreatheSmart purifiers. But I can’t help but think there would be even more people experiencing wonderful results if they weren’t pushing the machine to its manufacturer stated limits.

I’m not picking on Alen – it’s a widespread practice in many industries. But it wouldn’t be fair to anyone reading this review if I failed to mention it.

Automatic Air Purification

One of the things users like most about the BreatheSmart is the “Auto” mode setting. It’s a popular feature and with good reason. You can get your indoor air purified without having to think about it  and without having to adjust any settings manually.

Just plug the machine in and set it on automatic. The BreatheSmart has an intelligent built-in sensor that adjusts to the ever-changing air quality conditions. The automatic setting makes life easier. It also reduces unnecessary power consumption and wear and tear on both the filter and motor.

The only potential downside is when the machine unexpectedly kicks into Turbo speed. The sudden shift in gears can be an interruption. If you’re intensely focused on a task, or you’re sleeping, any interruption is less than welcome. On the other hand, if you’re sleeping on the job, “Auto” mode might be a lifesaver for a different reason.

“Quiet” Comes With A Cost

Lower settings on the BreatheSmart are much quieter.

But it’s important to understand that slower speeds mean filtering at a reduced rate. Therefore, it’s not necessarily quite as effective in larger spaces as suggested by the manufacturer.

Alen Breathesmart helps children breathe easier

The built-in “lights off” mode proves that the Alen Corporation listens to its customers. Many buyers need purifiers at night to help themselves or their children sleep better. But blaring lights can make this less than ideal sleeping conditions.

Alen listened and implemented. At a seemingly insignificant cost, they’ve made a lot of people happy.

Wouldn’t the world be a much better place if every manufacturer listened to and adapted their products to please more of those who buy?

Another helpful feature built into the BreatheSmart should be of particular interest for those with young kids around. Alen has thoughtfully added a locking control panel and the child-safe fan guard. Both are useful even for locations like offices and waiting rooms where young visitors are typically only present for short periods of time.

 Built-In Functionality

Alen BreatheSmart Air Purifier Functions Include:
Built-in Handles for easier moving around
4-Speed Motor and Fan Unit
Smart Sensor for automatic adjustments
Power/Sleep mode
Air Quality Light Indicator
Filter Change Light
On-Off Switch for Ionizer
Built-in Timer for automatic shut off

Alen BreatheSmart CADR and More

CADR: 300 (result of Energy Star testing)
Rate of Filtration: 99% of particles larger than .3 micron
CFM (measurement of airflow in Cubic Feet per Minute):

Turbo Speed: 285
THIRD: 225
FIRST: 150

The CADR rating favors machines that circulate more air. It’s a statistic that doesn’t heavily favor a brand like Alen. The Breathesmart does an admirable job of capturing and containing air pollutants. But it’s rate of circulation is lower than others.

 What Matters Most?

Since the primary purpose of any air purifier is to remove as many of the harmful irritants in the air as possible, it scores high marks. The problem is that a strong system of filtering often slows airflow.

The Breathesmart filters air better than it circulates it. Therefore, it scores lower on the CADR scale.

Any purifier that outputs more air automatically scores higher – irrespective of the machine’s true effectiveness in purifying the air. That’s why you should not place too much emphasis on any device’s CADR score. It’s one factor. But there are other things that matter more when it comes to generating cleaner indoor air.

When you receive your shipment, one thing you’ll notice is how much care and planning when into the packaging of these somewhat larger air purification units.

Alen Breathesmart Delivery

Your BreatheSmart arrives at your door expertly packaged and in perfect condition – just the way it should.

If every product was packaged with this kind of care, there’s would be  fewer complaints and happier buyers everywhere.

Changing Filters on the Alen BreatheSmart

It’s quick and easy to change the HEPA filters. The device itself will tell you when that time has arrived. Just be sure to listen, rather than ignore. Any quality air purifier is only as good as the filter that’s installed. If it has past its prime, a change will only improve performance and results.

Here’s how to change the filter, step by step:

1: Remove the front cover of your BreatheSmart.
2: Lift out the old filter and immediately place it a garbage bag that’s open on the floor. Notice how dirty it is. Look at the difference in appearance and weight between the used filter and the new.
3: Insert the new replacement filter.
4: Close the front panel and choose the speed setting you desire.

Your Symptoms Relieved

The BreatheSmart helps with multiple symptoms, making breathing easier for pretty much everyone.

Asthma sufferers reported easier breathing and less reliance on puffers and inhalers. For some, it appears to have eliminated or reduced the need for decongestants and allergy meds.

It has helped others get relief from bronchitis and other respiratory ailments.  It helps alleviate stuffiness, sneezing, coughing and that miserable feeling that goes with it.

Alen’s BreatheSmart air purifier is effective at removing the pungent smell of mildew in the air. But it’s important to note that mildew will often persist (with any system) if the cause is not properly addressed.

For example, there could be a mold problem and if you don’t fix the problem, cleaning the air is only a partial solution. In this case, it’s a band-aid measure that covers the problem – but doesn’t correct it.

This powerful device is also known to remove pet odors, smoke, dust mites, bacteria, pet hair and dander, fine dust, pollen and cooking odors too. All in all, it’s a dependable performer that’s certain to improve the air quality wherever you put it  to use.

Alen BreatheSmart vs Blueair

The Blueair equivalent is approximately 50% more powerful, for a price that’s about 10 to 20% higher. It’s also noticeably noisier and larger. And aesthetically, you can’t beat the BreatheSmart.

Frankly, it’s a better-looking unit than the Blueair 603. For some that won’t matter – for others, it’s a huge factor.

Performance is basically the same – no matter which way you go. Both of these units are heavy duty purifiers and both will do an excellent job of cleaning your inside air.

Alan Air Purifier Ozone

Pretty much every electrical appliance on the planet emits some ozone. But it’s likely that your microwave and TV emit more ozone than the BreatheSmart does.

Ozone emissions should not be a concern here. Any ozone generated would be of a negligible amount at most. This unit is completely safe. It’s been tested and approved for use in California, which has some of the strictest air quality controls anywhere.

What People Love About the Alen BreatheSmart Air Purifier

Below is a list of some of the advantages people have cited about the Breathesmart:

The washable pre-filter is a huge plus. It captures large amounts of dust and hair. While the standard HEPA filter handles pollen and fine dust.

The entire unit is light enough to be moved to different areas or rooms. The built-in handles make it easy to change locations.

With the BreatheSmart, you can set it and forget it. It clears the air well on auto and tells you when the filter needs changing. No thinking or extra attention required.

Assisted Filtration

The built-in Ionizer helps charge particles, enhancing filtration. This makes them stick better similar to the filter. It’s like dust sticking to a TV screen. Also, the fact that the Ionizer can be switched off is an added plus.

The Alen BreatheSmart is the ideal air purifier for shared workspace. It’s easy to set up and use and it generates cool air throughout the office. The lower sounds emitted are reported as being ‘pleasant’ by some. It produces a “white noise” that is not distracting at all in workplaces.

Another advantage of Alen air purifiers is you don’t have to remember to shut them off when you’re leaving the office. You can simply set the timer to handle this for you. The auto function works well and it’s overall, these machines are quieter than most competing units.

Maintenance: How To Keep Your BreatheSmart Performing Well For Years

Lightly vacuum the pre-filter frequently, as soon as particles become noticeable. Wash it and set it aside to dry completely before reinstalling. Do not wash the HEPA filter. Instead, change it as soon as necessary. Also, it’s recommended that you clean the sensor with each filter replacement.

What Some People Dislike About The Alen BreatheSmart

A complaint we often hear is that with the BreatheSmart, replacement filters are pricey – up $109 each. While that may seem expensive, these are cheaper replacements than the ones other machines require.

It’s worth noting that the complaint about the price of replacement filters is universal. It happens with every brand and virtually every model. And not just on air filters – but water filters too.

Sure it would be nice if the entire filter system lasted as long as the purifier itself. But that’s wishful thinking.

It’s like hoping car manufacturers would supply vehicle tires that lasted a lifetime – and you know that’s never going to happen – even though the capability exists.

Keeping It Real

Understand that you’re going to need one to two filter replacements every year and factor this into your budget. There’s no way to avoid it and still enjoy the benefit of cleaner, healthier air.

With walls and stairs acting as dividers, this machine is not as effective in a 1200 square-foot home as it would be in a 1200 square-foot open room. Common sense, right? Well apparently, common sense isn’t all that common.

In the case of a floor being divided up into rooms, it’s best to move the filter around from room to room or to get multiple devices, such as the T500. It all depends on the layout of your workspace or living space.

Another complaint is that there’s only one filter that can be used at any one time. The unit comes with a HEPA filter and a pre-filter. But for specialty applications like heavy odors or smoke, you’ll need to replace the standard filter and the filter designed for your specific needs.

It’s All Relative

Another slight annoyance is that it’s rather noisy. But noise is relative to what you’re used to. For example, if you’re used to city living, the fan in the BreatheSmart might not be bothersome at all – even on Turbo Speed.

On the other hand, if you live in the country where you sleep in complete darkness and true silence, the fan noise from any kind of purifier can be enough to bother you.

Another apparent disadvantage is that these units are manufactured in China. While Alen Air is based in Austin, Texas and all products are shipped from the United States, they still have the stigma of being “made in China”.

The World’s Supplier

What we all need to get used to is that pretty much everything is made outside of the United States now. Surprisingly, many top quality products are coming out of China these days.

MADE IN CHINAOh, there’s still lots of low-cost junk items and knock-offs made there and that will probably remain. But I was somewhat surprised recently to find the high-end stereo equipment I was considering was also made in China.

It’s a fact of life. Get over it. I suggest examining the product in detail instead of making a broad assumption.

These are large units that occupy considerable space. Some people have reported being surprised at how big these units actually are. Consider it almost to be the size of a small end table. That’s the amount of floor space that’s going to be required. Build this into your floor plans to avoid disappointment or surprise later.

These units are made mostly out of plastics and plastics are not very good for the environment. Some plastics emit gasses into the air. Although I suspect that emissions from Alen’s products would be minimal simply because they come from a line of products offered by a team who genuinely cares about their customer’s experience.

The Verdict: Alen BreatheSmart is a Winner

If your conditions and symptoms are improved by breathing cleaner, fresher air – you should get a BreatheSmart. Open it up, plug it in and let it rip.

Come back a couple of hours later and check out the condition of your room’s air. If air quality and purity make little difference to you, why spend the money?

Truth be told, there’s no downside to having cleaner air to breathe. We need safer, fresher air flowing wherever we spend our time. All things considered, BreatheSmart is a well-rounded choice.

The filters are not cheap – they never are. But with any quality air purifier, you must also have a quality filter.

These are high-performance machines for the serious seeker of cleaner, fresher air. They work well with the standard filter supplied. They might work even better for you with the right kind of specialty filter.

There are no side effects to using a well-made air purifier. It doesn’t just treat the symptoms, it goes after the problem in many cases such as dust, pollen, and other airborne pollutants.

There’s no expense more worthwhile than one that provides you with a healthier environment.

Alen T500 Tower Air Purifier Review: Great Name – Low Price

Alen T500 Air Purifiers: Economy and Effectiveness Combined

In this Alen T500 Tower Air Purifier review, you’ll learn all about Alen’s smart, attractive design that saves space. The T500 provides decent power and performance at a reasonable price. It offers a three-speed fan and ionizer. Additional filter options (4 in total) for the T500 are the same as what Alen offers for all of its air purifiers. I found this to be a relatively quiet device with easy-to-operate controls.

Can’t wait? Grab a great deal on the Alen T500 Tower Air Purifier now at Amazon.

Imagine a sleek tower design measuring a compact 22 inches in height and about 6 inches in width and you’ve pictured the Alen Air T500 Tower Air Purifier. Alen claims that it’s 25% smaller than competing brands. The fact that it takes up only a tiny amount of floor space is one of its most attractive features.

Ideal For Small To Mid-Size Rooms

Alen states that the T500 is good for rooms up to 500 square feet. But that may be stretching it.

The owner’s manual says that it covers 500 ft.² on high speed, 300 ft.² of medium and 150 ft.² on low. That’s what the manufacturer claims the machine is capable of handling. But I’ve discovered that a good rule of thumb is to reduce the manufacturer’s allowance by one-third to one-half.

Therefore, it seems more reasonable that a 250 to 375 ft.² room is likely closer to the optimal size for the Alen Air Purifier T 500. If your room is actually 500 ft.², you might be better off with a more powerful unit like the Fit50.

Removable Pre-Filter Makes Good Sense

Like other Alen units, the T500 contains a removable pre-filter that the air is forced through before getting to the HEPA filter inside. This device alone captures a significant amount of large particles, hair and pet dander.

What’s really cool about the pre-filter is that it can be emptied, vacuumed and washed regularly. It attaches with Velcro, so removal and replacement are easy tasks.

Longer Life Made Easy

Cleaning helps extend the life of filter – and the machine. Of course, it’s important that any such maintenance is performed with the greatest of care. The last thing you want to do is poke a hole in either filter. That means an earlier filter change than would otherwise have been required.

Specialty Filters Are Available

There are 4 filter types that are available as additional options with the T500. The same holds true with  every Alen Air Purifier system. These 4 HEPA filters are as follows:

Pure (for dust and allergens)
Fresh (with activated carbon to combat dust and light odors, and address allergy symptoms)
Silver (for allergies, mold, bacteria, light odors)
OdorCell (for smoke, heavy odors, and allergens)

What You Get With Your T500 Purchase

To Ionize Or Not To Ionize – That Is The Question

The Alen T500 includes a built-in ionizer. This can be switched off or on to suit your needs at ay time, just as I can with all Alen purifiers. The ionizer is a helpful component because it electrifies particles making more of them stick to the filter. This prevents those harmful pollutants from escaping back into the room air.

The 12-hour timer is another useful feature built into every T500. You can set it to power off at any predetermined time, so you don’t have to think about it later.

Plugs Into To Any Standard Outlet

The T500 is a standard, 120 V device that plugs into any corresponding wall outlet. Power consumption measures 53 Watts at top speed and 30 Watts at the lowest.

Several users report that it works well – even extremely well – in rooms that are 300-400 square feet in size. Your mileage may vary as is always the case.

A Little About Alen Air

Alen Air has been manufacturing and distributing a range of quality portable air purifiers since 2006. Based in Austin, Texas – they have continuously provided some of the best air purifiers on the market today right across the country.

Their stated intention is to improve life for their customers by cleaning the air and eliminating a large portion of the total particles and pollutants that make the air inside offices and homes less than ideal for breathing.

allergy relief from cleaner airAlen’s indoor air cleaning systems promise relief from allergies, asthma, pet dander, smoke, and odors and they do actually deliver on those promises.

Their air purifiers have helped improve the quality of indoor air so everyone fortunate enough to own an Alen product can breathe at least a little bit easier.

Healthier indoor environments begin with safer, cleaner air. In fact, the quality of one’s life is dependent on the quality of the air they routinely breathe.

Anyone considering an air purifier purchase would be wise to at least look that the various options offered by Alen Air. They manufacture quality products and the key is to choose the right model for your needs.

What’s Unique about Alen?

One advantage Alen offers stands head and shoulders above their competitors and that is their lifetime guarantee. It’s unmatched and in fact, unchallenged by competitors in the air purification industry.

Combined with the reportedly stellar customer service of Alen Air and it’s hard not to give this company and its line of products serious consideration.

Their commitment to their customers and the quality of their products shows that these guys mean business. Clearly, they have become a serious player in the air purification market in short order.

An Unmatched Warranty

While most companies offer a bare minimum guarantee, Alen Corp. goes way beyond the usual. Logically, the only way they could do this and stay in businesses is by producing quality products that customers value.

Logically, the only way they could do this and stay in businesses is by producing quality products that customers value. And that’s exactly what Alen Air does.

A Serious Player

That’s how they’ve become a serious player in the air purification market in short order.

While most companies offer a bare minimum guarantee, Alen Corp. goes way beyond the usual. Logically, the only way they could do this and stay in businesses is by producing quality products that customers value.

According to Alen, if there’s ever a problem with your air purification system and you have maintained it properly, they will either replace the faulty part or replace the entire system. Their claim is that this will occur whether the unit is 20 months old or 20 years.

There’s no doubt about it. This is the strongest warranty you can find in the industry.

Nobody else even comes close to offering what Alen does. Their warranty alone makes Alen a strong contender right out of the gate.

Regular Guarantees Still Apply

They also offer a standard, 60-day money-back guarantee. This allows you two full months to try out any one of their air purification systems. If it’s not to your satisfaction, you get a full refund, according to Alen (minus the shipping cost, which averages $20 – $30, depending on your location).

fast air purification from Alen

It’s interesting that the majority of customers notice the condition of their indoor air within about two days.

To be fair, it takes some considerably longer (up to a couple of weeks). And other people cannot detect any change in air quality.

Either way, you are within the stated limits of the money back guarantee period. While the manufacturer doesn’t promote it this way, in theory, you could take an Alen out for a test drive at very little risk.

Trial Run

So if you don’t notice improved results within the first two months, you can return the product and get your money back. In effect, you can actually try it out and let the machine prove its value to you before committing to any purchase.

So your total risk is twenty to thirty dollars to give it a whirl.

Should you have any questions, Alen Air offers friendly and helpful customer service agents who are there to walk you through any challenges you might have and address any concerns. These services are available to you as a customer for as long as you own any model of Alen Air purifier.

*Note: Neither the warranty or any extra assistance is transferrable to a secondary owner.

Alen Air Purifier Filtration

Alen Air’s systems are cleverly engineered for efficiency in cleaning the air. They use what they term “HEPA-like” filters in their purification process. It’s not “true Hepa” — and Alen has (unjustly, in my opinion) taken a lot of heat for this.

I believe Alen Air’s purification systems are engineered for overall effectiveness and therefore, are perfect for most people.

What exactly is a HEPA filter anyway? HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. Hepa filters are made of a special, pleated fabric consisting of a huge number of tightly-woven fiberglass threads. This formation creates a powerful shield that blocks various particles in the air.

The Magic of HEPA

Hepa was originally designed for military use. Since then, it has become a safe, proven and trusted process for effective air filtration.

True Hepa filters offer 99.97% effectiveness in removing airborne particles as small as .3 microns. Alen air’s HEPA-like filtration process provides 99% effectiveness down to an equal size (.3 micron). The difference in what is actually captured by “True-Hepa” over the Hepa-like version is minimal.  Filters provided by Alen (any version) have proven to be effective in blocking dust, pet dander, pollen, and mold.

Alen has engineered their units to clean with greater efficiency. The result for most users is fresher, cleaner air, faster.

On the flip side, if those .97 percent of microscopic particles are problematic to you or someone sharing the same indoor space, efficiency would probably NOT be your primary concern. In this case, your search would likely lead in the direction of a True Hepa purifier – one that would give you the absolute purest air possible.

How big is a micron?

The only way to comprehend the size of a micron is to compare it to something else. The thickness of a single human hair measures about 70 to 100 microns. How many microns can fit in a one-inch space? Answer: 25400.

Most airborne particles are much smaller than a hair, hence the need for air purifiers. Since HEPA blocks microscopic particles as tiny as.3 of a micron, it’s safe to say that this is an effective way to capture and contain those pollutants that damage your indoor air.

Takes Care of Most Airborne Particles

These particles are the irritants that negatively affect asthma and allergy sufferers – while making the air unhealthy for anyone.

Typically, airborne particles that affect those with respiratory conditions the most are often 1 to 10 microns in size. When those pollutants are removed from the air, that’s when allergy and asthma sufferers find relief.

All the crap that’s floating around out there isn’t helpful to anyone. But to those of us with any breathing-related issues, it can make life downright miserable.

Manufactured In China

All of Alen Air’s products are manufactured in China and shipped from within the continental United States. Some people are bothered by the “Made in China” association. But let’s face it, pretty much everything is made there these days.

Assuming that anything from China must be cheaply made or inferior in some way is no longer accurate. In truth, there are a lot of high quality, U.S. designed products from highly-respected brands are now made there and elsewhere.

What is “cheaper” are the labor and operating costs, forcing manufacturers of all kinds of products to find more competitive ways to deliver quality goods at home. It’s a reality of the world we live in today.

Alan T500 Air Purifier CADR

Any device’s CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) is one way to measure the effectiveness in refreshing the air within a given room. This measurement does not factor in the degree or effectiveness of filtration, only the rate at which filtered air flows back into the given space.

Below are the CADR results for the Alen T500 purifier:

Smoke: 121
Dust: 142
Pollen: 159

When should the Hepa filter be changed? Optimal filter changes depend on practical use, environment, and any specific health issues you want to address. The manufacturer recommends changing the filter every 6 months with daily use and every 12 months with light use.

Alen T500 Air Purifier with HEPA and OdorCell Filter

One popular configuration is to use the optional OdorCell Hepa filter in the T500. With this set-up, cigarette, cigar and pipe smoke removal is noticeably effective. The OdorCell is the best filter to use for smokers, or for any environment with strong odors.

It’s always best to place your device in the room and let it run on high for a couple of hours. Let the T500 go to work to clear the air of smoke and other pesky odors. This combination is also effective at filtering large particles, fine dust, and any pollen that may be in the air.

All Motors Make Some Noise

Alen’s T500 operates relatively quietly, except on higher speeds. But this is a common issue with every air filter/purifier on the market. Motors make noise.

The higher the speed, the louder they get – that’s just the way it is. You wouldn’t expect an electric fan to be quiet when you crank it up as high as it will go. So you shouldn’t expect a purifier to be any less noisy.

If you’re using the T500 in an extra dusty room, such as during renovation work, it’s important to let the dust settle and then clean it up as best you can before activating the purifier.

If you don’t do this, you’re effectively shooting yourself in the foot.

The result will be a quickly clogged purifier and poor results. If you don’t clean any dust accumulations first, the fan will simply blow it around and stir up more of the dust that’s already there, worsening air quality instead of bettering it.

How To Use an Alen Air Purifier T500

All Alen units sold in the United States and shipped from within the country. So you can expect delivery within a reasonable timeframe.

When your Alen T500 arrives, you’ll see that it was well-packaged and preassembled. This means is easy to be up and you’ll be running in no time. Simply take your sparkling new T500 out of the box.

Next, locate and then insert the separately packed filter. All units come with the Hepa–Pure filter for dust and allergens. With the filter installed, all you have to do is plug it in and choose your speed. Now you’re ready to begin enjoying, cleaner, healthier air.

What People Like About The Alen T500 Tower Purifier

Everybody loves the sleek design and the compact size of the T500. It takes up very little space. It’s lightweight and is easily placed anywhere with the built-in handle. Perfect for traveling with too. The buttons are easy to understand – POWER, TIME, ION, SPEED, and RESET.

This device does an effective job of cleaning and refreshing the air. It provides relief of allergy symptoms such as itchy eyes, stuffy sinuses, and that miserable feeling that goes with it. The T500 works to eliminate dust, dust mites, mold spores, mildew, pet dander, pollen and cooking odors from the air. It is extremely quiet when on low, which is ideal for a private office or bedroom.

The T500 helps with those with sensitivity to odors in the air. It’s a cost-effective tool for anyone with a sensitive nose that may be exposed to irritating scents.

It’s A Self-Serve Purifier

The pre-filter is easy to vacuum clean and rinse in water. It should be left to dry thoroughly before it goes back in. This helps extend the life of the filter and purifier providing, delivering greater value to the buyer.

What’s particularly gratifying is that every time you clean the pre-filter, you can see just what it has accumulated. Often you’ll find plenty of dust and hair trapped in the pre-filter. This is positive proof that the device is working as it should.

The T500 helps make breathing easier and better. Most buyers notice a difference within a matter of hours. Generally speaking, there is less dust around.

Another thing that people like is that with this filter you can set it to high when you’re not there. This way the loud noise at the top speed won’t be a factor and the purifier can get to work and clean the air.

The T500 produces results fast with noticeably cleaner air. It’s a good solution for budget conscious buyers. It’s inexpensive as far as purifiers go. yet at the same time, it’s an efficient machine.

The quality of customer service one might expect should certainly be a factor when making any kind of air purification purchase. Alen scores full marks in this category. They’re quick to reply courteously to questions and concerns.

Set up is easy. Simply receive the package. Open the box, read the manual, install the filter set up the unit where you want to plug it in and turn it on. Let it run for 15 to 20 minutes initially at least and notice whether you whether it makes a difference.

What People Tend To Dislike About the Alen T500

Some have complained that the T500 is slightly more expensive than others in its class. I guess it all depends on how you look at it and what value you get for your money.

At high speed, the noise can be problematic for some. It’s louder than others in its class. On the upside, it is more powerful and power comes louder machines.

Cooler Air

Another complaint about the T500 is that it cools the room down as it blows out clean, cool air. It isn’t just the T500 – All Alen purifiers do this. But this effect is not limited to Alen. Cooler blowing air may be a disadvantage in the colder months.

But it’s also a huge advantage in the summer as it may allow you to turn down the air conditioning and still feel comfortable.

Replacement filters are not cheap. Current filter prices range from $44-$89 – depending on function. This always seems to be an issue with any type of filtration system.

Wherever filters are used, replacements are necessary for maximum effectiveness. Replacement filters are something that should be factored into the cost, no matter what purification system you buy.

If you think this or any tower purifier is a heavy duty piece of equipment – it’s not. It’s meant for smaller rooms primarily, or for operating on medium or low speeds. Those speeds are not going to completely clean the air inside a 500 square foot room.

The Scent Of Plastic

Another issue cited is that it has a plastic smell to it. This can be a problem for people with extra sensitive noses. But for most of us, it’s a non-issue.

Due to the fact that this is a smaller air purifier, some report not seeing clear evidence of cleaner air. But I think this is more a function of the conditions of a given room rather than the effectiveness of the purification unit. Others complain that they still have to dust. But no air filter or purifier is designed to be a replacement for regular dusting and cleaning.

Some users have said that some have said that while the T500 removes smoke, it doesn’t seem to get rid of the smell that lingers. Again the issue may be one of cleaning. Smoke easily penetrates clothing, upholstery, carpet, and drapes.

Filtering the air is only part of the solution. All those smoke infused elements need to be thoroughly cleaned as well.

The Verdict Is In

The T500 is built and backed by a quality name that’s been around for the past decade. Truth is, the T500 works well when used properly, but for mostly smaller rooms. It’s also not difficult to take with you on your travels. If you travel a lot on business, this could be a Godsend.

All things considered, the T500 works best as a “starter” air purifier. It’s more of a light-duty model then the much bigger units like the BreatheSmart, also manufactured by Alen.

For A Single Room – The T500 Works Well

The T500 is best used for one room at a time. It can definitely be useful and depending on your needs and budget and the size of the room it’s intended for, this device could be a terrific solution for you.

Many satisfied customers purchase several of these units for separate, private offices or individual bedrooms in a house. The T500 may be the ideal filter if you have lots of enclosed spaces such as private offices or the typical rooms of the house or apartment.

If your floor space is divided up into individual rooms and those rooms are not of a huge size, this option could serve you well – but it can only do one room at a time.

If you’re unsure as to whether the T500 would be suitable for you, I suggest starting with one. Buy one unit and take good care of it. Use it as directed and within a limited space. Only then you can you accurately judge its effectiveness and determine if it’s a good match for your needs.

Blueair Purifiers Review: Efficient Design Delights and Cleans Air Fast

This Blueair purifiers review will tell you all you need to know.  Blueair is a brand that has quickly established itself as a major player in the industry, with several lines of well-made air purification products. Each product is designed to handle a particular room size – and ‘handle’ it, they do. If you want fresh, clean air inside and you want it fast – you owe it to yourself to check out Blueair.

In a rush? You can find a full range of Blueair Purifiers at a great deal here on Amazon

What About Blueair?

Since 1996, this Swedish company has designed, manufactured and distributed a range of quality, portable air purification systems for indoor use.

Blueair air purifiers are often recognized as the “Mercedes Benz” of air filtration. It’s only fitting, due to the quality of the engineering and their proven performance. But with that built-in quality comes the inevitable higher price tag too.

Oxygen Producing Circle of Trees

These heavy-duty systems are known for their ability to clean the air of dust, pollen, pet dander, smoke, mold spores and other impurities. At times, the improvement in air quality is noticed in minutes. At other times, it takes days. But the average time required to feel the difference a Blueair air purifier makes is about an hour or two.

HEPAsilent Technology

Their patented technology, called HEPAsilent, combines two different methods – mechanical and electrical – to purify the air in a room. Every system they develop begins with three primary components: a fan, ionization chamber, and filter. Actually, there are three separate filters in every Blueair system.

Sounds simply enough. But the brilliance of Blueair lies in the details of these components and how they work together to trap pollutants and produce fresher, cleaner air.

Smaller units are equipped with handles for easy movement of the larger units are supplied with wheels, making it easy to move on floors of hardwood, laminate, or tile. Even with most office carpeting,  it’s not difficult to move the larger wheel-equipped units. On thicker carpets, however, it’s quite difficult. Carpets are not the best for moving any device with wheels on it.

The Blueair Line-Up: Impressive and Large

Blueair produces multiple lines of air purifiers. The Classic line, which covers the 200, 300, 500 and 600 series of purifiers. The Blueair Pro line is made for larger rooms and includes the Pro-M, Pro-L, and the Pro-XL. “Pro-M” handles rooms up to 390 square feet. The “L” system is built for rooms up to 780 square feet. And the “Pro-XL” is designed for rooms up to 1180 square feet.

These are well-made, heavy-duty systems engineered to clean and freshen the air inside offices, shops, and other large, open air spaces.

Blueair Purifiers in the office

The Sense and Sense+ are Blueair’s most recent developments in air purification. These second generation purifiers are motion controlled and Wi-Fi enabled. Both versions are also available in a variety of colors.

Monitor Your Air Quality

“Aware” is the name of the Blueair air quality monitor. It’s designed to be used with or without a blue air filtration device. This product provides an indication of the quality of indoor air.

What’s nice about “Aware” is that it takes into account airborne particles, carbon dioxide, and VOCs. When used with a smartphone and the Blueair Friend app, it sends important air quality data, alerts and updates to the device. The app can also serve as a remote control for any digital Blueair system.

The design, engineering, and manufacturing of these air purifiers seem to be based on these four keys: quality, energy efficiency, ease-of-use, and overall performance. Sure looks to me like they’ve done an admirable job. Blueair isn’t perfect. Neither are their products. But they score a “pretty damned good” rating on the HealthyOfficeHub.com quality meter.

Built To Last

The Blueair is built to run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Blueair units feature galvanized steel housings, making them durable enough to last a long time. It’s engineered to provide years of service, although filters need to be changed every 6 months and the machine vacuumed regularly.

Blueair purifier quality

It’s a good idea to monitor your purification unit for excessive dust buildup that could affect performance. Do this and you shouldn’t have any problems.

Typically, your Blueair device should serve you well for years. But it also depends on the environment and how it’s used and maintained.

If you’re using it the office of a woodworking shop, for example, there is probably more sawdust floating around than in most offices. So you’ll need to keep a closer eye on the system and its filters.

What Are Blueair Systems Made From?

All Blueair filters are made out of nontoxic polypropylene and constructed of millions of extra thin fibers to aggressively trap airborne particles that have caused your indoor air to be less than ideal.

Polypropylene is one of the least harmful plastics as it doesn’t release gasses or microscopic particles into the environment. Blueair filters also eliminate bacteria, viruses, and mold spores naturally – without the use of chemicals.

The company claims that their filters trap more dirt and pollutants than those of competing products. It would be difficult to argue, given the power and efficient design of the Blueair line-up that enables the air to be cleaned quickly.

Another interesting point is that when a Blueair filter reaches the end of the road after having served its purpose, it decomposes into carbon dioxide and water, making it harmless to the environment.

Blueair Delivers Fresher Air

environmentally friendly air purifier

Blueair is rated among the best for producing clean air. The Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) is a numbering system established by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers that measures the clean air output of various devices.

This is one important factor you might want to consider. But what most people don’t realize is that the CADR only factors in smoke, dust and pollen and not gas pollutants.

What’s Different About Blueair Purifiers?

Most other air cleaners/filters/purifiers on the market are either HEPA filters or ionizers – not both. But Blueair combines these two technologies for greater effectiveness in producing cleaner, better breathing air.

HEPA filters capture some air particles on their own – particularly the larger ones. But what the HEPA alone might miss is caught by the electrostatic charge given in the Blueair ionization chamber. This dual process of mechanical and electrical is far more effective in scrubbing the air than either process alone.

A Different Kind of “Charge”

Most electrostatic air cleaners operate by charging the filter itself. But there’s a problem with this approach. Filter charges eventually weaken, making those devices less effective. Without a strong charge, harmful particles won’t stick to the filter and could escape back into the room.

Blueair purifiers are different because it’s the incoming air particles that are electrically charged. This means they naturally cling to the filter and are never released. They produce cleaner, safer and healthier air. They also do it faster and require little energy to do so.

Blueair systems are solid and they deliver impressive results. It’s clear that they’re designed and built to provide multiple years of service.

If you’re interested in breathing easier and enjoying a fresher, quality air, a Blueair purifier makes a solid choice.

Many buyers have claimed that it reduces their asthma or allergy symptoms including coughing, dry throat, sneezing, runny nose, sinus congestion, and headaches. It also helps lower the spread of infections and helps promote overall wellbeing. Several people have stated that their Blueair system helps them get a better night’s sleep. This is important because proper sleep is essential to good health.

Several online buyers have clearly indicated that their Blueair system helps them get a better night’s sleep. This is important because proper sleep is essential to good health.

Let’s face it. Cleaner air in our lives can make a world of difference.

cleaner fresher air inside

With Blueair, you’ll likely experience fresher, cleaner air, with less dust – unless you’re in an excessively dusty environment, or your air quality was acceptable from the start.

If you have pets, you can count on having less hair and dander floating around. And if removing the odor of urine from carpet or rugs is important, this device will do the job handily.

Adjust It To Suit Your Needs

Due to the variable settings on these machines, it’s easy to be able to function in a room that has a Blueair purifier going. Some buyers report having their purifiers next to their desks, or close to television sets, without any problem – except on the highest setting – where the noise can be a distraction.

At top speed, the Blueair does move a tremendous amount of air. Under normal conditions, you probably won’t need it on “high” for long to transform the quality of the air. Another option is to let the machine run high only after hours when nobody is around.

What buyers need to be aware of is this: variable air quality inside your office or home can produce different results. In other words, your starting point (including the severity of any symptoms or sensitivities to bad air) could be a significant factor in the model you choose and ultimately, the results you experience.

How Good Are Blueair Air Purifiers?

The best judge of effectiveness is always one’s own personal experience. You can read all the reviews and assess information all day long. But the true value of the device for your own needs can only be determined after you’ve tried it out. Kicking the tires isn’t enough. You’ve got to take that baby for a spin and put it to the test.

Plug in a Blueair system and sooner or later you’ll find that the room air is noticeably fresher than it was before. There’s no question – these machines work well in purifying the air inside.

If you or those around you have any known allergy or asthma symptoms, chances are the right Blueair purifier for the room will at least alleviate those symptoms to some degree. It will also improve your overall sense of wellness.

How Noisy Are These Devices?

Generally, Blueair air purifiers are reasonably quiet. In fact, this brand is among the quietest portable air purifiers available today. It’s important to note however that the noise level generated is relative to the speed setting of the fan.

Most users report that on the lower settings, the noise is either imperceptible or very low and not the least bit problematic.

It’s important to note however that the noise level generated is relative to the speed setting of the fan. Most users report that on the lower settings, the noise is either imperceptible or very low and not the least bit problematic.

It’s only when you increase the speeds that the presence and power of the motor become more of a factor. When running at the highest setting, it can be loud.

That’s one of the disadvantages of the automatic option available on some models. You just don’t know when the machine is going to instantly ramp up the speed. At the higher levels, this could interrupt your focus – or your sleep.

Size Matters – As Far As Rooms Go

Blueair systems are each designed to purify the air of a certain room size. It’s important that you get the right system for the space in question. Many people buy one unit and move it from room to room and that seems to be helpful. But you need to make sure that the environment you’re trying to purify isn’t any larger than the allotted space for that specific model.

Some people have exceeded the manufacturer’s recommended room size and still been satisfied with the results. But I wouldn’t suggest pushing the envelope. Better to follow the guidelines and get the system that’s a proper fit for your specific needs.

One of the biggest advantages of a Blueair system is that it is designed to purify a lot of air in a short period of time. It moves more air than most other filters I’ve seen. This makes it quick and efficient at refreshing any stale indoor air.

No Added Heat

Another attribute is that Blueair purifiers do not generate external heat and therefore do not add additional heat to a room the way that an appliance like a vacuum cleaner might. This is a key factor to remember.

On a hot day, nobody wants to contribute to the bad inside air by using something that’s going to make the room even warmer. That’s just crazy.

The Blueair easily overcomes odors from office equipment such as the toner from printers and copiers. Paint fumes are quickly absorbed. It also handles food odors efficiently which comes in handy when somebody opts for a pungent stir-fry or fish lunch.

How Does the Blueair Purification System Work?

It’s not difficult to notice the quality and easy functionality that’s been built into every Blueair unit. The intake is at the bottom of the machine while it blows out clean air from the top. My guess is that’s why it’s able to clean the air as efficiently as it does.

The process of purification begins with the fan, which draws air inside. This air is then forced into an ionization chamber. Here, ions provide an electrical charge to the particles suspended in the air. It’s this charge that helps those particles stick to the filter, where they remain. Clean air is then driven up and out of the unit and back into the room.

The large central fan efficiently pulls air into the machine and then forces it through a series of three filters. On the downside, all three need to be changed at the same time. According to the manufacturer, their filtering process removes up to 99.97% of airborne particles down to as small as .1 micron in size.

Adjustable Speeds Provide Flexibility

All models are available with variable speed settings and speed effects the rate of filtration. All Blueair purifiers run on 110 volts and each is equipped with a standard three-prong plug.

Not only does the amount of air purified increase with the speed of the fan, the noise level increases too. Noise volume ranges from virtually silent at the lowest setting to somewhat loud at the highest. The motor is smooth and free of vibration. Right away you get the sense that this is a much better quality of motor than that used by some of the other manufacturers.

How To Choose The Right System For You

The key to making a wise purchase decision is to know the room size and choose the appropriate model. Keep in mind that there needs to be significant air to process in order to witness a measurable improvement in air quality. That’s why you should let the system run for an hour or two on the highest setting. Give it a decent run and I’m sure you’ll be pleased with your investment.

Some units come with magnetic remote control devices. Since it’s magnetic, you can stick it to the steel housing so it doesn’t get lost. Digital models can be controlled by a smartphone that can easily be set up as a remote control.

Some  Blueair models have automatic options while others are strictly manual. Choose the one that best meets your needs and budget right here.

Having only a manual adjustment is never a bad thing though because it gives you full control and prevents a noisier level from coming on automatically and interrupting your work at the office, or your sleep at home.

Set-Up Is Quick and Easy

The simplicity of owning a Blueair machine is evident almost immediately after it arrives at your door. Set-up couldn’t be easier. You just remove the preassembled purification unit from the box and place it close to an electrical outlet. Then all you have to do is plug it in, select a speed and let it run.

The built-in ionizer charges particles upon entry so they stick to the filters. Larger units feature larger fans. These don’t have to turn is fast in order to process a considerable amount of air. The result is a more efficient and quieter operation than one might expect from such a large device.

Test Various Locations

To get the most out of your Blueair purifier you’ll want to experiment with different locations in the room. A centralized location may help improve efficiency.

The three filter system means there are three avenues of lower resistance the air is channeled through. This is naturally more energy-efficient than forcing the air through one path of high resistance, with triple-stacked filters. Such an approach would probably require a larger, more powerful and louder motor.

Lower caliber air filtration units attempt to collect particles the same way a strainer captures food. This approach catches those larger particles, but clearly, it’s not very  effective. Blueair uses an electrostatic grid to pull particles to the filter, so more of those particles are captured and contained.

Where Are Blueair Purifiers Made?

Blueair air purifiers are a Swedish invention, designed and engineered in Stockholm. Most, if not all of the parts contained within a Blueair device are manufactured in China. Some units are assembled, or partially assembled in the USA. So one could reason that it’s an international product line with a growing popularity both in the United States and around the globe.

Some people may be turned off by any products or components labeled as “made in China“. But that’s not at all unusual because China has long had a bad name due to a large volume of inferior quality goods coming out of the country. Thankfully, things have changed. Now it’s not just junk – but many top-drawer products too that China is producing.

It’s a sign of the times. The economic reality is such that in order to provide competitively priced products, even quality manufacturers are relying increasingly on China (and other countries with cheaper labor costs) to produce quality merchandise for less. Since these companies have the ability to accept or reject anything that is produced, overseas factories have risen to the challenge and there are a lot more quality components being made there now than ever before.

How Do You Change a Blueair Filter?

It’s recommended that Blueair filters be changed at least twice per year. Indeed, it is a bit of an annoyance. But it is necessary and the outcome does make it worthwhile.

When you stop and think about it…

You wouldn’t expect your office printer or photocopier to work continuously without replacing the ink cartridges or toner. And you wouldn’t expect your car to perform at its best without changing the oil at regular intervals either. So why would you expect your air purifier to work continuously, without routinely changing the filters?

Routine Maintenance Ensures Years of Reliable Service

It’s just one of those things that need to be done. That’s the reality. Frequent filter changing leads to better air. But sure, those costs add up over time.

Most devices are equipped with timers to let you know when your filters are in need of replacement. With each unit having three filters – all three should be changed at the same time. It’s necessary to do so to get the cleanest air possible and to comply with your Blueair warranty.

Factor In The Cost Of Replacement Filters Too

You can always increase the frequency of your filter changes based on room air conditions, should you choose to do so. With each change, you’ll notice just how dirty the filters get. You’ll be glad you didn’t have to breathe in all that extra pollution.

Blueair filters aren’t cheap. But they are built better and last longer than many other filters on the market. There’s no technical ability required to change the filters. No tools are required either.

You simply open the door covering the filters. Lift out the old filter and replace it with a new one. Be sure to insert all filters properly by following the direction of the arrow. Then, close the door, plug in your machine and you’re good to go again.

How Do You Clean a Blueair Purifier?

It’s easy to do basic cleaning and maintenance of a Blueair system. Regular vacuuming and dusting are important as dust will enter the machine and collect. Over time, it can build up fast and can stick to internal components whenever there is moisture in the air. In this case, you would also benefit by having a dehumidifier in the same room.

Pet hair and dust can be a problem. Moisture will cause it to cake on the internal components. Frequent inspection, cleaning, and servicing can prevent these problem build-ups from occurring. But if you can’t get at the dust, it may be time for a service call. That’s when you should call Blueair directly.

What People Love About Blueair Purifiers

The one thing people love most about Blueair is the performance it delivers. It’s a durable, well-engineered machine that provides adjustable settings to your suit current room conditions.

It works continuously and reliably for long periods of time. Some people have owned the same Blueair system for ten to fifteen years. So over the long haul, it represents solid value. Every year your device continues to perform adds to the value you get from your investment.

People love that Blueair delivers clean indoor air, efficiently and reliably. It’s a brand that has been known to help people breathe easier. Many who were bothered by allergies or asthma appreciate the way their Blueair purifier has reduced symptoms and eased their discomfort.

Another thing people love is the energy efficiency of these units. Their clever design means maximum air flow while consuming a minimum amount of power. These units only require the same energy as a single light-bulb, so doesn’t cost much at all to operate them.

What Some People Hate About Blueair Purifiers

The number one gripe people have about Blueair is the purchase price of their larger purifiers. There’s no question that these aren’t cheap machines and therefore, not for everybody. When you factor in the brand name filter sets that are required twice a year, it can get a little pricey.

Changing the filters is another common complaint. It’s not that it’s a difficult task. It’s the mere fact that it needs to be done that seems to bother some folks.

Changing filters is one of those things in life that are boring but necessary. It’s like doing the dishes or vacuuming the house. It’s not exactly a pleasant experience (for most people) although it’s not among the most annoying tasks either. But left neglected, it soon has a negative effect on one’s quality of life.

Others complain about the sheer size of these machines. The Pro models and the Classic series look like large desktop computer units and that seems to bother some folks. But with an increase in size comes an increase in air processing power from these efficient air purifiers.

The Verdict is In

With Blueair you’re getting a top-quality, intelligently designed air purifier. There’s no question – they work and work well. While they are typically a bit more expensive than other quality air purifiers, we recommend Blueair for their effectiveness in generating fresh, pure air efficiently and cost-effectively.

If the quality of your indoor air is important to you, Blueair is a name you should seriously consider.
